Molly the Muffin, age 12 or 13, lost her life yesterday to an autoimmune disease which attacked her red blood cells. She was diagnosed eight months ago but had an excellent quality of life until just a few days ago when her body was unable to fight off a massive infection.
We adopted Molly from the Larimer Humane Society 10 years ago. She had been returned from 5 failed adoptions before we found her and began obedience and then agility to help her bond to us. Many of you will remember how she would occasionally jump the fence at a trial and run off through the park or down the street--giving me a tremendous scare. Finally, she began to bond and achieved many titles and qualified for both the USDAA and AKC Nationals a few years ago. My granddaughter Erika won many Junior Agility titles with her, too.
The Beardie community fondly called her "The Neardie" and supported and encouraged us. Photos of her Benjy-like face graced the cover of many calendars and illustrated many books. She was a Delta Society certified therapy dog who brightened the lives of many children and elderly folks. Throughout her life, she carried three pieces of buckshot in her neck from having been shot, apparently, when she was a stray.
She will forever be in our hearts. Hug your pups.

Molly's accomplishments at the recent USDAA Nationals:
Molly the Muffin had three qualifying scores in Junior Handler, Elementary Division, with Erika Union, my granddaughter, age 10. She earned a Q and first place in three classes: Standard Class, Junior Jumpers, and Junior Spotlight in the 16 inch division. Although she had perfect 100 in the qualifier for the Junior Grand Prix, the four available spots went to faster rounds. We were still very proud of Molly and Erika.
