Maggie and Calvin at home
3/19/01
We both really surprised right now. We hadn't figured the last four legs of Mag's AG III (U-ACHX) title would come this quickly.
A change of handlers, the change of pace, the emphasis on control vs speed looked like it ought to cause the team more of a problem. I have to hand it to Jo for understanding that completing qualifying legs was the critical thing.
Mag got her first AG III leg on 4/15/2000. She did not compete in a UKC event again until 2/17/2001. Jo did not even run her during the time off. Jan, Jo and I thought it would be better if Mag wasn't confused by the differences between AKC and UKC trials. Or, by having two handlers at the same time.
Jan ran Mag exclusively during those months in AKC, and NADAC trials. Since Jan was getting a beardie puppy of her own in January of this year, we agreed to try the switch back to Jo as handler and running UKC trials until she completed the AG III title requirements.
We figured 3 - 4 months. Mag and Jo surprised us by doing it in about 6 weeks.
Jo gave Mag the month off in January. No agility training at all. By February, she really got excited to see the Paw Power Blues training facility again. Jo and Maggie ran practice trials with a group one night a week for a couple of weeks. Then, since the next UKC meet was at that facility, we figured why not enter.
Ready or not, they were in it. Mag got all keyed up, and ran like she was on a AKC jumpers course for her first trial. Jo was rustly and between the two of them they NQed.
The next day was truely a new day. Jo set the pace of the run. Jo protected the contacts by slowing Mag down, and they got a 199. That was on 2/18. They had been training for a little over two weeks, and they proved to themselves that they could do it.
Thanks to Jan, Mag was comfortable working away through the course. But, the 6 foot zone on the table/box and weave poles caused some misques between Mag and Jo right from the start. On 3/4/2001, we drove over to Elkhart, Indiana for two UKC trials in one day. Jo took control and they got another 199, leg three. They had the next trial, leg four, in the bag, but got crossed up on a back jump two jumps from the end of the course. Somehow, Jo ended up standing between two jumps, blocking the very path she wanted Mag to take around the backjump.
Mag decided what to do before Jo could, and jumped the backjump again. One major fault and you are through. So it was back to training and on to this past weekend.
We went to Aurora, Illinois for one trial a day this weekend. While the gym is large and the trial area bigger than any other UKC site we've run at, the courses were deceiving and included many tight turns (for the larger dogs). Most of the up contacts had just such a turn going into them. Jo worked hard to keep Maggie's alignment to the contacts correct.
Jo ran Maggie out of the fast line to gain the room to make the proper entrances. It was really nice to watch. They qualified both days. Legs 4 and 5, two placements and Maggie has her U-ACHX.
Tonight, Jo and I were looking at each other wondering what just happened.
