The 2012 CPE Nationals

East Coast - New York - 15-17 June 2012

June 24, 2012
Ruth Bryden wrote:

Hi Libby,

There were 4 beardies at the CPE East coast event. Sparky with Marguerite Gosen, and Farley and Granite with Nancy May, Caol Ila and me. We were running in 6 rings so I have to say that I did not see any other beardie run and only saw them in passing a couple of times. I am sure they all flew the flag of beardiedom.

The trial was great. We had amazing weather, not a drop of rain. It was lovely to be outside with your dogs. The six rings were very well organized.

Caol Ila (who was 2 yrs old in March) managed to qualify with her last standard run before the cut off date for qualifying in February. My only hope at nationals was to run to the best of our abilities and I do mean "our" as I am frequently the weak link. As a level 2 dog, Caol Ila had to run the same courses as the top level dogs but we could have faults as specified for level 2 and only competed against other level 2 dogs.
We far exceeded our expectations and qualified in 8 out of 9 runs many with no faults. As a result, we won HIT for Standard level 2. She is a wonderful little dog and I am very proud of her.

Glayva made the trip too but purely for the ice cream social. He excels in this sport!

Were there any beardies at the West coast event?

West Coast - Washington - 15-17 June 2012

2011 AKC Statistics

157 Beardies earned a total of 2,283 legs in the Regular, Preferred and FAST classes with 973 placements in all breed and Specialty competition. Compared to 2010, these numbers represent a 6% decrease in total Beardies earning legs (157 vs 165), a 3% decrease in the total number of legs (2,283 vs 2,345) and a 10% decrease in the number of placements (973 vs 1,102). 98 of the 157 teams accounted for 221 total titles (73 Novice, 64 Open, 41 Excellent, 26 Masters, 16 Championships, and 1 TQX). This represents a 10% decrease from 2010 in the number of teams earning titles (98 vs 108) but only a 4% decrease in the total number of titles (221 vs 229). Five teams competed at the 6th AKC Agility Invitational in Orlando, FL in December, 2011. Karen Barratt and Miller (Colquhoun’s No Time To Relax) were the High Scoring Beadie team, made the finals, and emerged the winner of the 20” class. Karen and Miller completed 3 MACHs in 2011. Ten teams qualified for the AKC National Championships to be held in Reno, NV in April, 2012; two teams qualified for the Preferred Nationals competition. Jeff Ipser and Zoom (Wigglesworth Super Sonic) earned the first Beardie MACH13 and tied with Karen and Miller for the most QQs (41). Carl Widell and Polo (Caledonia’s O Polo Mio) earned the most TQs during the year (5). Competition in the new AKC game, Time2Beat, was initiated July 1. Although 19 Beardies have earned legs in this new class, none were able to accumulate the necessary 100 points/15 legs in 2011 required to earn the title.

BCCA Awards for 2011

The BCCA honors the top agility teams at each competition level (Novice/Open/Excellent) in both regular Standard and Jumpers With Weaves (JWW) and Veteran Beardies competing in the Preferred classes. The complete scoring systems for these awards can be found on the BAD website (www.BeardieAgilityDiehards.org).

Colquhoun’s No Time To Relax (Miller), owned and handled by Karen Barratt of Galveston, TX is the winner of both the Diehard and the Overall JWW awards. Miller and Karen had an outstanding year in 2011. They completed three MACHs: MACH3 in January, MACH4 in May, and MACH5 in December. In addition, Miller finished a TQX, which requires a team to qualify in Excellent B Standard, JWW, and FAST on the same day 10 times, a very difficult feat! Miller is also the top Beardie in Excellent B Standard and JWW and in total MACH points. He earned 105 regular class legs, 1,482 MACH points, 41 QQs and 4 TQs. Miller and Karen finished the year with an impressive Beardie first, winning the 20” Class at the AKC Agility Invitationals in Orlando, FL! The Diehard Award is supported by BAD; the Overall JWW Award is supported by Beth White, in honor of Mirage, the first winner.

The 2011 Denia Award winner is Ha’Penny Harwood Ode To Choi (Snow) owned and handled by Tracy Corey of Gilbert, AZ. This award is given for competition in Standard agility to the Masters level. The Denia Award is supported by Emily Venator in memory of Denia, the first Beardie to earn an AKC agility title.

Chaniam Creag (Rocky), owned and handled Lori Weinberg of Edwardsville, IL is the winner of the Preferred Trophy. This award is given for competition in Preferred Standard and JWW and honors Veteran Beardies (born in 2003 or before). It is supported by Carl and Kay Widell in honor of Cagney, the first Beardie to earn the AXP and AJP titles.

2011 AKC Eukanuba Invitional

Karen Barratt’s Miller wins the 20” division at the 2011 AKC Eukanuba Agility Invitational!

"I'm waiting for one of this breed to take it all in national competition." The above statement was made by Bud Houston about Bearded Collies in a 1998 message to Libby and posted on the BAD web site. Bud Houston's wait is over thanks to Karen Barratt and Miller! Lu and I add our congratulations to the many already posted to Karen and Miller for their outstanding performance and monumental accomplishment at the 2011 AKC Agility Invitational. In watching the posted video of their final run, I wasn't surprised when it was stated that only two teams had a clean run. I considered the course as being extremely challenging, but Karen and Miller performed the course with a flowing smoothness unhampered by the presence of the many traps, sharp turns and reverse directions. A truly impressive performance!” --Jerry Bergen.

“The Beardie Agility community is totally thrilled by Karen Barratt’s and Miller's (CH MACH5 Colquhoun's No Time To Relax MXF TQX) win over the 109 dogs in the 20" division at the Eukanuba Invitationals. Congratulations are pouring in from Beardie people on Facebook and the Agility Line as well as from all-breed agility clubs. When I watched the video, I was very impressed with how calm Karen seemed and how very clear her directions were to Miller on the tortuous course! Karen has been serious and dedicated about training for many years. I am so happy it has worked out for her and our breed!”-—Libby Myers-Buhite

Karen wrote, “Thanks to everyone in the Beardie community for your kind words and support. I still can't believe we did it. It was so surreal. Ann and I drove 17 hours yesterday to get home on less than five hours of sleep, and all the way my feet never touched ground. I must have rerun those runs a hundred times in my head. I believe it was truly MILLER's TIME.

“Sunday he lived up to his registered name, Colquhoun's No Time To Relax. Our stars were definitely in alignment because there were some awesome dogs in the finals who would have won had they run clean. Miller was as smooth as glass in that final run. It was as though he knew it was his turn to take the blue. I'm so very proud of him and grateful to all the spectators and judges at the show who expressed their delight in seeing a Beardie win first place.

“I'm especially grateful to my dear friend Ann who was probably more excited than me when Miller won. Of course, most of you who know Ann don't have to work hard to imagine her reaction!

“2011 has just been a great year for my boy. We had plenty of those yeehaw years so to finally come together as a team makes all the training and driving 140 miles to classes worth the effort. I'm always very proud to take my Beardies into the agility ring, and I don't even mind being called the ‘other BC.’ I know the odds of placing or winning when in competition with the faster breeds so I've never made it my goal to beat them. My goal is always to use my training to run the smartest possible course for my own dog.

“I just love our Beardies, their attitude, their spunk and bounce and can't imagine running any other breed of dog just to win. Beardies will always rule in my book. There are some very talented Beardies and handlers competing today in agility, and I hope that they will have a chance to experience what we got to do at this Invitational.

“I think all of the Beardies and handlers who competed in Orlando did an outstanding job of representing the breed. Their paths this year may have had a few puddles, but Linda Porter’s Mika, Diane Lipman’s Paige and Kailey, and Ann Chandoha’s Dru are great dogs, and each showed why they deserved to be there. I wish each of you a season of joy and blessings in the new year!” --Karen, Budweiser, Jet, Miller (now affectionately referred to as "Champ") and Packer.

“What an unbelievable experience!!! Karen and Miller won the 20" Invitational! And, I must say she DESERVES it! Dru and I came away with two clean runs. Proud of my girl AND even more for her brother!!!” --Ann Chandoha.

In April of 2010, the BCCA Board approved amended scoring systems for our annual agility awards. Major changes included elimination of placement points from all scoring systems and changing the eligibility for the Novice A-Excellent A standard and JWW awards to the year in which a title in that class is finished.

BCCA Awards for 2009 by Joanne Williamson

The BCCA honors the top agility teams at each competition level (Novice/Open/Excellent) in both regular Standard and Jumpers With Weaves (JWW) and Veteran Beardies competing in the Preferred classes.  The complete scoring systems for these awards can be found on the BAD website (www.BeardieAgilityDiehards.org).

Wigglesworth Super Sonic (Zoom), owned by Jeff and Sharon Ipser of Auburn, OH, and handled by Jeff, is the repeat winner of both the Diehard and the Overall JWW awards.  Zoom and Jeff completed three MACHs in 2009:  MACH8 in April, MACH9 in July, and MACH10 in December.  Zoom is the youngest dog of all breeds to achieve a MACH10.  He is the first Beardie to earn the new title, TQX, which requires a team to qualify in Excellent B Standard, JWW, and FAST on the same day, 10 times, a very difficult feat!  Zoom is also the top Beardie in Excellent B Standard and JWW and in total MACH points, QQs and TQs.  He earned 161 regular class legs, 2,017 MACH points, 50 class placements, 69 QQs and 17 TQs.  In addition, Zoom qualified 24 times in Excellent B FAST and is the only Beardie to earn a perfect score of 80 this year.  The Diehard Award is supported by BAD; the Overall JWW Award is supported by Beth White, in honor of Mirage, the first winner.

The 2009 Denia Award winner is Cameron Sugarland Express (Shug) owned by Jill Scarborough of Jonesboro, AR.  This award is given for competition in Standard agility to the Masters level.  The Denia Award is supported by Emily Venator in memory of Denia, the first Beardie to earn an AKC agility title.

Blackfrair A Scot On The Rocks (Chloe), owned by Tony and Jan Vallone of Centreville, VA, and handled by Jan, is the winner of the Preferred Trophy.  This award is given for competition in Preferred Standard and JWW and honors Veteran Beardies (born in 2000 or before).  It is supported by Carl and Kay Widell in honor of Cagney, the first Beardie to earn the AXP and AJP titles.

Spindrift Nonesuch Made Ya Look (Logan), owned by Dianna Anderson of Brainerd, MN, and co-owned by Cheryl Poliak, is the winner of the Sunshine Award for the top Beardie earning a title in Novice A Standard.  This award is supported by the Florida club.

Recognition is also given to the teams earning the most placement points at each level in Standard and JWW.  The JWW awards are named in memory of Ryan, the first Beardie to earn an agility title, and are supported by Beth Canner.

The Standard award winners are:

Novice A – Ragtyme Ever And Always (Nevin) owned by Lynn & Vince Zagarella of Elizabeth, CO

Novice B – Wynsum Keep On Dreaming (Delaney) owned by Carol Carlsen of Oxford, MI

Open – Britannia Runaway Angel (Vickie) owned by Elizabeth Kortze of Mineral, VA

Excellent A – Calleigh’s I’m Your Ticket (Ellie) owned by Tony & Jan Vallone of Centreville, VA

Excellent B – Wigglesworth Super Sonic (Zoom) owned by Jeff and Sharon Ipser of Auburn, OH

The Ryan Award winners in JWW are:

Novice B – a tie between:

Open – Springhill’s Isabelle (Izzy) owned by Steve Lausmann of Citrus Heights, CA and co-owned by Pat Palozzola

Excellent A – Lil’ Clove Hello Poppet (Poppet) owned by Trudy & Chelsea Wisner of Staten Island, NY

Excellent B – Wigglesworth Super Sonic (Zoom) owned by Jeff and Sharon Ipser of Auburn, OH

2009 Statistics
154 Beardies earned a total of 2,007 legs in the Regular, Preferred and FAST classes with 997 placements in all breed and Specialty competition.  113 of these teams accounted for 222 total titles (92 Novice, 59 Open, 31 Excellent, 26 Masters, and 14 Championships).   The level of participation in the Regular classes was down 11% from 2008 but more titles were earned (214 in 2008 vs 222 in 2009) by the same number of teams.  The number of Beardies competing in the Preferred classes only increased from 19 in 2008 to 27 in 2009.    Three teams competed at the 4rd AKC Agility Invitational in Long Beach, CA.  Linda Porter and Mika (Fox Lane’s Mika At Tweeddale) again made the finals as they did in 2008.   Six teams qualified for 2010 AKC National Championships to be held in Tulsa, OK in March, 2009; one team qualified for the new Preferred Nationals competition.  Sarah Halsey and Wizard (Anasazi Secret Of The Wizard) continued their record of Beardie agility “Firsts” by earning their MACH10 in November.  Jeff Ipser and Zoom (Wigglesworth Super Sonic) earned the first Beardie TQX.

2010 AKC National Agility Championship Qualifiers

The 2010 AKC Agility National Championships will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, March 26-28, 2010.  In order to be eligible to compete at this prestigious competition, teams had to earn at least 6 double Qualifiers (QQs; qualify in Excellent B Standard and JWW on the same day) and 400 MACH points (1 point is earned for each full second under Standard Course Time) between December 1, 2009 and November 30, 2010.

The teams eligible to compete in the Regular Championship  are:

Karen Barratt and Miller (Colquhoun’s No Time To Relax)

Sarah Halsey and Wizard (Anasazi Secret Of The Wizard)

Jeff Ipser and Zoom (Wigglesworth Super Sonic)

Linda Porter and Mika (Fox Lane’s Mika At Tweeddale)

Lori Weinberg and Rocky (Chaniam Creag)

Joanne Williamson and Flash (Britannia Flashback)

For the first time, AKC is also offering a Championship competition in Tulsa for dogs qualifying from the Preferred classes; dogs must have earned 6 QQs in Preferred Excellent B to enter.  Seven Beardies have accomplished this task.  Eight other teams had more than 6 QQs but not the 400 points and one had more than 400 points but not the QQs.

The only Preferred team eligible:

Jan Vallone and Chloe (Blackfriar A Scot On The Rocks)

In a message dated 3/29/10 Karen Barratt writes:

Hi everyone-

Here's a brief report on our experience at Nationals this year....

After a miserable showing on Friday in the International courses we got it together for the remaining AKC courses. Miller has been trained to do mostly distance work so the threadles and wraps on Friday that require SOOOOOOO.... SOOOOOOO....many front crosses ate our lunch. We do an occasional FC when needed but the successful teams had handlers literally running backwards doing FC's for most of the two international courses. If I were 19 again like many of them I would try it....but...

The AKC courses were not as tight but still had plenty of challenges. I was able to keep him clean with rear crosses and layering using his distance skills.

If ever you get the opportunity to go to one of these events it's just mind boggling to see the multitude of very fast, very well trained teams. It's the ultimate seminar for handlers of all levels. The 20" class was huge this year with 270 in all. We began walk thru's at 6a.m., ran all day with the last 20" dog finishing at 5:30 on Saturday. Sunday Linda and I walked at 6 a.m. and didn't run till 11:45. You have to stay on your toes just to remember how you walked the dang thing!

I met Pam Blackstone(a Beardie owner) who flew in from New Jersey just to watch the Nationals. She was there every day offering encouragement to both Linda and I. What a nice gal!!!! Tammy wished us clean runs as well. She judged us on an international course so unfortunately didn't get to see clean from Miller and I.

I'm off to Ann's now to reclaim my other three dogs and to run Miller and Dru in a trial near her house next weekend. We are hoping for the last 2Q needed for MACH 2.

Karen, Miller, Budweiser, Jet and Packer

AKC FAST Agility Class – New Advanced Title: Triple Q Excellent (TQX)

On 20 July 2009 the AKC approved a new advanced agility title, the Triple Q Excellent (TQX). In order to acquire the Triple Q Excellent title, a dog must receive 10 triple qualifying scores from the Excellent B Standard Agility Class, the Excellent B Jumpers With Weaves Agility Class and the Excellent B FAST Agility Class on the same day.  The Triple Q Excellent Preferred (TQXP) title has the same requirements, but from the Excellent B Preferred classes.

FOUR Beardies have earned the Triple Q Excellent = TQX

Congratulations to Linda Porter and Mika, Foxlane's Mika At Tweeddale, Bobbie Raguse and Kira, Shanaspree Rose Of Kilravock and Jeff Ipser and Zoom, Wigglesworth Super Sonic for their outstanding performances at the AKC/Eukanuba Agility Invitational!  Linda and Mika earned a 3rd place/90 in the 20" class and 4th place/77 in the Agility Herding Group.  They had five clean runs and the 3rd fastest time in the finals.  Bobbie Raguse and Kira had a 12th place finish with three clean runs and a 97 and were only ONE place out of the finals! Jeff Ipser and Zoom finished in 15th place with three clean runs and a 95.  It is amazing to think that Beardies took three out of the top fifteen places in this all-breed, best of the best trial. Sarah Halsey's Wizard, MACH8 ADCH Anasazi Secret of the Wizard MXF, and Karen Barratt's Miller, CH MACH Colquhoun's No Time To Relax MXF, also had several clean runs.  Beardies were well represented indeed!

2006 BCCA AKC All-Breed Agility Trial

Buckeye Ranch Equestrian Center

5665 Hoover Rd, Grove City, Ohio

August 25, 26 and 27, 2006

Agility Judges: Blair Kelly and Sherry Porter

Agility Committee: Rosie Schroeder, Walt Ernst, Maryann Szalka, Diane Lipman and Jeff Ipser

"The first all breed agility trial held by the BCCA was August 25, 26 and 27, 2006. This 3 day trail was held in a horse arena at Buckeye Ranch in Grove City, Ohio. This location is on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. Our 2 judges, Blair Kelly and Sherry Porter, each judged about 300 runs per day. Their courses were designed for the beardies to run and show their talents. The course flow and the ideal dirt footing saw some very fast times throughout the weekend.

Beardies and their owners in attendance were:
Maryann Szalka with Cowboy, Chase and Checkers
Walt Earnst and Rosie Schroeder with Mickie
Bobbie and Bill Raguse with Kira
Jan and Glen Norikane with Gina
Diane and Dina Lipman with Abbey and Paige
Jeff and Sharon Ipser with Jax, Zoom, Lizzee and Libbee
Barb Erway with Bella

The beardies made their presence known early in the trial. Excellent Standard on Friday saw Kira and Zoom taking second and fourth place in a large 20" class. In fact, the only person to finish in front of Bobbie and Kira was Linda Mecklenburg, an AKC world team member. With that performance, Kira and Bobbie earned the High In Trial. A large HIT ribbon and beardie note cards and towels were their prizes. In addition to placements rosettes, beardie placement rosettes for each class ran were awarded. All of the other beardies and owners followed Kira's lead by being successful in their classes. Almost every beardie got a Q during the weekend. Besides Kira and Zoom, Paige, Lizzee and Bella got placements in their classes during the weekendPaige and Bella got their first Excellent legs during the weekend. This was Barb Erway's first agility trial with other beardies in attendance. Barb trials in Kentucky. We all welcomed Barb and her rescue neardie, Bella.

Saturday night, we took the judges out to dinner. We had good food and conversation. Both judges were very interested in our breed and asked questions concerning origination, health issues, club size and by-laws. They were also impressed with our Beardie Camp program.

I want to thank the other members of the trail committee Maryann, Diane, Rosie and Walt. I couldn't have done it without your participation.

We're going to hold another all breed agility trial February 17 and 18, 2007 in the same location. We hope to see you there."

NCBCC AKC All-Breed Agility Trials

National Capitol Bearded Collie Club

Cedar Run Horse Center
14600 Leilani Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22193
May 27 and 28, 2006

Agility Judges:  Donna Gomer and Denise Thomas

Trial Secretary: Jean Conroy

Trial Chairman:  Tony Vallone

Hi All,

Just a note to congratulate the winners of our Beardie High in Jumpers and Standard winners from the NCBCC trial this weekend. We actually did the HIJ and HIS awards each day of the trial this time, instead of over the whole weekend or just on one of the days.

On Saturday the winners were...

Standard

Sprite (Moonstone Kindred Spirit) and Beth Kortze -

with an awesome run where I think he got something like 13 MACH points and fifth place (I think)

Jumpers

Streaker (Oakengates Winning Streak) and Terry Johnson -

with a fantasic Novice JWW run.

On Sunday

Standard

No winner, but the trophy will carry over to next year

Jumpers

Sprite (Moonstone Kindred Spirit) and Beth Kortze.

So, now the Kortze house has a matching pair.

Val Maloney painted the beardie themed agility trophies for us, and they were wonderful! She also donated the shipping which allowed us to stay under budget and do the awards both days. Everyone thought
they were great and I'm hoping we'll be able to have them again next year.

It was our first Memorial Day trial and was very exciting to not have to worry about bitter cold, wind (indoors), torrential rain, mud, or any of the other things we've had to worry about at our November trials in the past. We're optimistic that we've finally found a home for our trial where we can be year-over-year. Given that we've had to move our site for various reasons for the last five trials. We had great judges and they built very nice courses for us. It was a little hot for beardies by Sunday afternoon.

We had help from a couple of beardie agility people who aren't even members of our club, but chose to make the journey to pitch in. We're very thankful to have such BAD people. Thanks Jenny Scheytt, and Jeremy and Heather Gahres. We also had great support from members of our agility community who helped us tremendously the day of the trial and from a couple of our club members, Beth Jacob, Rick Kortze and Jan Vallone come to mind. Our committe put in a lot of work and hours planning the event and bringing it to life, Tony Vallone, Terry Johnson, Sandy McDonald, Beth Kortze and myself.

Overall it was a great trial and we have several things that we're planning to do next year to make it even better.

Take care,
Casey Minner

Val's work on our Trophies was really nice... They were slate tiles with a beardie doing agility (weaves or jumps). One of these days we'll win one of those trophies although no doubt it will take us some time... Stats for Kip and I for Spring 2006 will be forthcoming but aren't much to brag about with so much time taken up with our first litter in five years. Agility seemed to take a back seat this year but for good reason, I think!

Beth and Sprite for the most part only trial one weekend day and usually not more than a couple weekends a month and are a such a fun team to watch --kudos for earning back to back trophies. I'm really proud of Beth and her dedication. She retrained some really good contacts last summer which are paying off big time. Terry and Streaker are having a lot of fun with their agility debut this spring and I bet that won't be their only trophy.

The indoor horse arena is home to several local club's trials and a popular venue. But wouldn't you know it, it was the HOTTEST Memorial day since 1991!

"We're very thankful to have such BAD people. Thanks Jenny Scheytt, and Jeremy and Heather Gahres."

I second that thanks. Only thing is, we didn't get to see Heather run agility in her tutu with Elton -- she and Jere came down from PA to socialize and work their butts off in the heat and humidity. Jenny in addition to coming from Michigan to work also got to meet and interview a couple of blue beardie boys - as potential agility teammates!

The trial weekend ended on a relaxing note when Sheila, Bracey and Cheney joined the majority of the committee and our BAD helpers for a BBQ and bounce. Sheila came directly from her NADAC Club's NADAC Trial and painted vivid word pictures of Bracey's contact challenges and kept us in stitches. Combining a mini FL Beardie Agility Camp reunion with the conclusion of the trial was the perfect way to end Agility for the Spring!

As always for me, Agility is not about stats but about friends.

Sandy McDonald

I also wanted to send out congrats to the NCBCC trial beardie winners. There were many great beardie runs over the weekend. I so enjoyed coming down to the trial, but I did miss running my girls in the company of great people, beardies, judges and courses. It was fun to see old friends and meet some new ones too. The trophies they won were very nice too bad I wasn't able to smuggle the remaining one home to Michigan with me!!

I have to say the NCBCC puts on a good trial and I was glad to be able to help out. Even in the hot weather I still had a good time. Special thanks to Sandy and John who put on a great mini-bounce at their house after the trial on Sunday. John cooks up the best hamburgers. It was also great to see Sheila and her yummy desserts too.

I also had the oppurtunity to stay with the Minner family including Heart's 8 puppies (thanks so much Casey). Nothing is cuter than 7 week old beardie puppies. I know there will be several future BAD puppies in that litter including one little boy who will be coming all the way up to Michigan to join my girls and I.

Anyway just wanted to send out a big congrats not only the winners of the trophies, but to the agility commitee who put on a great trial. I only wish I lived closer so I could make it an annual event for me and my beardies.
