At their May meeting, the BCCA Board voted to approve the agility committee's proposal to establish an annual award for Beardies competing in the Preferred classes. This award will go to the top veteran dog, 7 years of age or older during the entire competition year, for performance in both Preferred Standard and Jumpers with Weaves. As with all the agility awards, only legs toward titles will be counted. It will be retroactive, to include those veterans who won in 2005, 2004, and 2003 (including Sept-Dec 2002). The scoring will be based on the same sliding scale as the Denia Award, with 8 points for a 100, down to 1 point for an 85. The award is sponsored by Carl Widell.
The 2003 winner is Ch Caledonia's Cagney MacCalico PT, NA, NAJ, AXP, AJP (Cagney), owned by Kay and Carl Widell of Brownsville, OR and handled by Carl Widell and Amy Steltz. Cagney was born in 1992 and earned his winning legs as an energetic 11 year old. He is the first Beardie to complete the AXP and AJP titles
The winner for 2004 and 2005 is Ch O'Duinnin Dazzle 'Em Dallas MX, MXJ, MXP, MJP (Dallas) owned by Nancy Pelton and Eileen Dinneen and handled by Wade Pelton of Wimberley, TX. Dallas was born in 1996. She is the first Beardie to earn the MXP and MJP titles.
MACH Harley of St John PAX MXP4 MJP4 (Harley), owned and handled by David Williamson of Pearland, TX is the winner of the Preferred Trophy for the second consecutive year. This award is given for competition in Preferred Standard and JWW and honors Veteran Beardies (born in 1999 or before). It is supported by Carl and Kay Widell in honor of Cagney, the first Beardie to earn the AXP and AJP titles.

FAST is a new AKC titling game. Competition in this game was initiated on January 1, 2007. In order to qualify, a team must accumulate a certain number of points (50 for Novice, 55 for Open, 60 for Excellent) and successfully complete a distance challenge in a fixed amount of time (for 20" dogs, 32 seconds are allowed; preferred competitors get 3 additional seconds). Each obstacle on the course is assigned a point value. The maximum number of points possible is 80; no one attained a perfect score in 2007. Beardies have proved to be quite adept at this fast paced and challenging game of strategy. Sarah Halsey and Wizard (Anasazi Secret Of the Wizard) of Fallbrook, CA hold the distinction of earning the first FAST titles at all levels. Jack Buhite and Caper (Skyedance Lord-A-Leaping) earned the first Preferred Novice and Open FAST titles. For each class the average scores have been tabulated; for Excellent B only, the number of legs earned is indicated. The BCCA Agility committee will be considering adding FAST awards to the agility program in the coming year.

155 Beardies earned a total of 1,977 legs in the Regular, Preferred and FAST classes with 963 placements in all breed and Specialty competition. 108 of these teams accounted for 180 titles in Standard and JWW (65 Novice, 41 Open, 39 Excellent, 28 Masters, and 7 Championships) and 76 titles in FAST (49 Novice, 20 Open, 6 Excellent, 1 Masters). The level of participation in the Regular classes was up 3% from 2006 but fewer Novice and Open titles were earned. The level of participation in the Preferred classes was about 20% higher than in 2006. 43 Dogs earned at least one leg in Preferred; of these, 15 competed in Regular and Preferred, and 28 in Preferred only. Four teams competed at the 2nd AKC Agility Invitational in Long Beach, CA. Jeff Ipser and Wigglesworth Super Sonic (Zoom) were the highest placers. Six teams qualified and three teams competed at the 2008 AKC National Championships held in Tulsa, OK in March, 2008. Linda Porter and Oakengates Irish Cream (Bailey) were the highest placers. Several “firsts” should be noted. Sarah Halsey and Anasazi Secret Of The Wizard (Wizard) earned the first MACH7 by qualifying for their 140th QQ in August, 2007. Sarah and Wizard also earned the first Regular FAST titles at all levels (Novice to Masters). Jack Buhite and Skyedance Lord-A-Leaping (Caper) earned the first Preferred Novice and Open FAST titles. David Williamson and Harley Of St John (Harley) earned the first PAX title. Jeff Ipser and Zoom went from MACH3 to MACH4 in a record three months.

There are no BCCA Awards based on MACH points and 2Qs but AKC does keep track of these and bases breed ratings and qualification for the Invitational on the values. Beardies may be few in number but they are mighty in agility and there is plenty of competition for the five slots to the Invitational in Long Beach, CA. The BCCA award year runs from January 1 to December 31, so these standings may be different than those of the Invitational which runs from July 1- June 30. Jeff Ipser and Zoom (Wigglesworth Super Sonic) earned the most MACH points and 2Qs for 2007.

BCCA Motion 4/97/01 (Amended 05/99-04 and 05/05-01): "Motion to establish a Register of Merit Agility (ROMA) for Beardie dams producing two or more offspring having a total of at least three agility titles and for Beardie sires producing two or more get having a total of at least five agility titles. A Register of Merit Agility Excellent (ROMAX) shall also be established for Beardie dams producing offspring having a total of ten or more agility titles and for Beardie sires producing get having a total of fifteen or more agility titles. Regular agility titles are: NA, OA, AX, MX, NAJ, OAJ, AXJ, MXJ, MACH, MACH2, etc. Preferred titles are: NAP, OAP, AXP, MXP, NJP, OJP, AJP, MJP, MJP2, etc. Either Regular titles or Preferred titles may be counted toward the Register of Merit Agility (ROMA and ROMAX), whichever titles are higher, but they may not be added together."
