Annual Agility Report for 2023 - BCCA Agility Committee
October 9, 2024

Goals met for 2022-2023:

All agility titles, including FAST, Time2Beat and those of the Premier program are now counted toward the Register of Merit for Agility. Dams, as well as sires, now need at least two offspring and five titles to earn the Register of Merit for Agility (ROMA). The ROMAX still requires two offspring with 15 titles for sires and 10 for dams.

Activities and Major Accomplishments:

A: BCCA Awards:

Joanne Williamson has done all the statistics for the BCCA Awards and AKC annual reports since 1996. Libby Myers-Buhite does the annual Register of Merit.

BCCA Trophies:

The BCCA Board asked the committees to take charge of their trophies, whch included storing, shipping to and from the Nationals, and adding yearly plaques. Otherwise the trophies were to be sent to those who had won them the most. Joanne and Libby chose the second option: Larry Dalan received the Diehard, Jeff Ipser the Denia and the base for the overall JWW trophy, and Jan Leverenz the Veteran Plaque. The committee will continue to provide annual mementoes for the Diehard, the Denia, the Veteran Award and the Sunshine Award. Beth White provides an annual John Stanbridge bronze for Overall JWW and Lorie Weinburg provides an annual Fastest Beardie Award.

B. Trials:

BCCA:

The Bearded Collie Club of America holds at least one annual National Specialty agility trial.

Affiliate Clubs:

The Northern California Bearded Collie Fanciers hold two weekends of all-breed agility trials annually. Jack Buhite chaired the NCBCF’s 81st – 83rd agility trials in April 2024. 10 were stand alone specialties. 73 were all-breed trials

C. Publication:

The Agility Committee fosters the sport of dog agility through publication in the Bagpipes and the Beardie Bulletin. Milestones, explanations of new classes and rule changes, AKC statistics and national competitions, agility events, awards, tributes, stories, and agility exercises are published in the Bagpipes. The annual reports appear on both the BCCA and BAD websites. All AKC Titles and BCCA Awards are published in the Bulletin, as well as National Events and articles on the sport.

The Beardie Agility Diehards (BAD) pay for all agility pages above the yearly allotment in the Bulletin and for the publication of USDAA, NADAC, CPE, UKC, and UKI titles as well. Over the last 27 years the Diehards have sponsored articles in 85 issues of the Bulletin and contributed $23,805 toward the publication of 293 agility pages.

D. Internet:

The BCCA website's Agility Section contains agility articles and a link to the Beardie Agility Diehard website (www.beardieagilitydiehards.org).

The BAD website, created by Karen Norteman and launched on New Year's Day 1998, has a large section devoted to BCCA Agility, listing the current BCCA Agility Committee, the complete list of BCCA Agility Award winners since 1996, the Register of Merit for Agility, the National Specialty results starting with the first trial in 1996, and the annual agility reports. There are pdfs of all AKC Agility legs earned by Beardies from 1 January 2012 through 31 August 2024 so that BAD Members can update their pages. The website features a Rainbow Bridge page for all BAD Agility Beardies. Currently there are 992 Agility Beardies on the BAD Website, including 939 at home and 53 abroad. Of these, 862 have earned legs and titles in the six United States and two Canadian dog agility organizations and 710 are BAD. The Beardie Agility Diehards Discussion Group, which began in 1996, was moved to BeardieAgilityDiehards@groups.io on August 5, 2021 and currently has 155 members.

The Beardie Agility Training & Performance Facebook Page was started in in 2017 by John Youngblood. Currently, it has 87 Members. This group is designed to be an online resource to help in the training and performance of Bearded Collies in dog agility. To join, contact John.

E. American Kennel Club

AKC Correspondence: None needed this year.

Statistical Information:

American Kennel Club- January 1-December 31, 2023 – Annual AKC Report from Joanne Williamson 116 Beardies earned a total of 1,922 legs in the regular, preferred, FAST, T2B, and Premier classes and the ACT program. 59 Competed in the regular classes with 41 in preferred and 7 in both; 9 participated in the ACT program. 83 of these teams accounted for a total of 213 titles including 7 MACHs and 6 PACHs. Lawrence Dalan and Bing (Wigglesworth Pride And Prejudice) earned MACHs 18 and 19, thereby extending the beardie record for number of championship titles completed that they had previously set; they were also awarded an AGCH3 title, another beardie first for this talented and consistent team. Joanne Williamson and Truman (Charter’s True North) earned their MACH and MACH2 in 2023.

2023 Agility Invitational Qualifiers:

The competition year to qualify for the AKC Agility Invitationals in Orlando, FL on December 15-17, 2023 ended on June 30, 2023. Each beardie earned one point for every full second under standard course time in Master Standard/JWW classes and 10 additional points for each QQ (qualifying in Standard and JWW on the same day). The top 5 in the regular classes and the top beardie in the preferred classes have received invitations to compete in Florida. If any of these decline the invitation, the next beardie in the rankings will be invited to compete.

Congratulations to Larry Dalan who qualified with both Bing (Wigglesworth Pride And Prejudice) and Ash (Wigglesworth Wynsum Gone With The Wind), Lori Weinberg and Spark (Nonesuch Flint And Steel ), Jan Burgan and Tartan (Tweeddale’s Magic Tartan Of Brooknoll), Janice Leverenz and Lager (Wynsum Turning On The Charm), and Joanne Williamson and Truman (Charter’s True North). Although six beardies were entered, only four showed, Larry Dalan with Ash and Bing, Lori Weinberg with Spark and Joanne Williamson with Truman. Unfortunately, no beardie team made finals this year although (I believe) Larry and Bing had four clear rounds in the preliminaries and therefore won the breed medallion offered by the BCCA.

H. Thank yous:

The Agility Committee thanks Joanne Williamson for 28 years of recording and analyzing AKC and BCCA statistics and Karen Norteman for designing the BCCA and BAD websites. We also thank Joanne Williamson and Libby Myers-Buhite for their columns in the Bulletin and Bagpipes, including: all Agility titles earned in 2023, AKC Statistics for 2023, the BCCA Awards, the Register of Merit for Agility, the 2023 Invitational Standings, and the National Agility Championship Standings. Joanne contributes many AKC updates and training articles to the Bagpipes, as well.

We especially thank Lillian Esposito and Michele Ritter for doing such a fine job with agility publication in the Bulletin and Bagpipes. It has been a pleasure working with all of you!

And finally, many thanks to those who made our 29th and 30th Annual BCCA National Specialty Agility Days at All Dogs Can, Lapeer, MI an event to remember. Carol Carlsen chaired with her committee: Sheila Franklin, Christa McChancy, Jan Leverenz, Bobbi Paschka, Martha Fruewald, and Nancy Kois. Sheila Franklin coordinated the Fun Run and provided scrumptious cookies, David Williamson organized the senior Glory Runs. Bob Leverenz and Jack Buhite were our Chief Course Builders. Joanne Williamson calculated the Highs in Trial and all of the Special Awards, and Libby Myers-Buhite organized the ribbons and prizes for presentation to the winners. The sense of community and good fellowship was palpable.
