Baliwyn's Precious Friend (Breezy): January 27, 1991 - June 1, 2008
Breezy's life ended peaceably on a Sunday afternoon. Breezy had let us know that it was time.
Lu and I thank everyone who sent emails in response to my recent post reporting on Breezy's failing health. Your expressions of sympathy and support and the many who shared their experience of losing a Beardie friend gave us the strength to make the decision to end Breezy's downward spiral. Your caring let us know that we wouldn't grieve alone.
Breezy is the dog of our lifetime. Breezy transformed the ordinary lives of 2 ordinary people into a fairy tale-like experience. Because of Breezy Lu and I have wonderful friends that we would not otherwise have including many we have never met like many of you reading this post. Breezy had taken us out of our confined world and took us to places and events beyond our imagination. Our home is filled with trophies, plaques and ribbons because of Breezy. More importantly, she filled our home with love and companionship. She gave our lives purpose, pride and fulfillment. She lived up to her name, Precious Friend. Breezy was extraordinary! We are humbled by her greatness.
Breezy's death has left an extreme emptiness in our lives. Lu and I are grieving deeply. We are comforted by knowing that all of you understand our grief.

Lu and I have accepted that the last chapter of Breezy’s storied life is being written. However, we hope it will have a few more pages. Breezy is 17 years 4 months, and she looks and acts like an old dog. Her hearing is gone, her vision is worsening, her coping ability is lessened, her legs are weak and her gait is awkward and unstable. Writing about Breezy today is not as pleasurable as it was in the past when words about Breezy’s agility feats came easily.
Lu and I are having more difficulty dealing with Breezy’s aging than Breezy appears to be, although she occasionally has her moments. Her eyes are as big and as expressive as ever, and they display no sadness - just acceptance of her fate and gratitude for when we assist her to do what she can no longer do. Lu and I now sleep in the study to be within a few feet of Breezy asleep on her dog bed. Lu in her recliner and me on my airbed places us close enough to hear when Breezy struggles to get up to go outside to pee. Sleep is seldom more than 3 hours at a stretch and often less. It’s becoming more frequent that Breezy is unsuccessful at being able to right herself so I must assist her up and carry her outside. At times she is so weak that I resort to holding her upright with a sling. These episodes of weakness usually are the result of her anxiety when she is unable to stand, and we are slow to respond to her need. Riding in the car has become too stressful for Breezy so she no longer leaves home, and either Lu or I will remain with her while the other runs errands. We keep Valium prescribed by the vet available for the anxiety attacks or for an emergency ride to the vet like that that recently occurred. A mass that existed on Breezy’s front leg for months suddenly ruptured requiring immediate surgery. The mass was a tumor of connective tissue arising from the wall of a vein. According to the vet the tumor is likely to reoccur over time but not likely to spread to other parts of the body. Lu and I take each day one at a time to give Breezy as many more days as possible.
Some who read this might think it’s time for that dreaded decision, but we see a Beardie who still looks forward to dinner and enjoys eating. Also, Breezy on her better days – with difficulty – will willingly accompany me on a slow, short walk part way around the house even with a dozen staples in her leg covered with dressing at her surgical site. It’s our quiet time doing something together as we always have done. Our wonderful long walks in the meadow and our shorter walks down the driveway to get the mail are now just memories. Breezy’s survival is now dependent on us more than ever. As long as Breezy shows no signs of giving up, neither will we.
When that last page is written in the story of Breezy’s life, we hope it will have a peaceful ending. Regardless, it will be about a love that will never end.

16 years ago Lu and I said good-bye to our 1st Beardie, Mistiburn Daisy. At that very sad time in our lives we were not aware that a new Beardie life was beginning that would bring joy back into our lives.
Today, January 27th, we celebrate Breezy's 16th birthday. Birthdays bring back memories, and I remember an 8-week-old puppy experiencing her first snow soon after arriving to her new wintry Vermont home from a very spring-like Pennsylvania. She sat in her new yard with her head raised and mouth open trying to catch the snow flakes. As a youngster Breezy would walk with me in the meadow on a leash that she never let go slack, and if a stick were anywhere within reach she would carry it the rest of the way. Breezy would be the first to see the chipmunk perched atop the stonewall, but it would disappear long before her nose got to investigate every crevice below where it sat. Only the stick in her mouth kept her nose from becoming wedged between the stones. In our home Breezy kept a large basket empty of the dozens of squeaky toys that Lu and I repeatedly gathered from every room. A hopeless cause! I remember a fuzzy face peering out the window of the house to watch me leave for work and later for my return. And, so many memories of dog shows and of obedience, tracking and agility trials and of the many doggie and people friends made.
Today, Breezy is much wiser. She doesn't stare in amazement at nature's wonders. Sticks on the ground are now walked around, and the leash is in no danger of breaking. She often doesn't see the chipmunks anymore or hear their nervous chatter, but she does occasionally catch their scent long after we passed their perch. The house is neater now with the squeaky toys undisturbed in the basket, and the house is quieter, too. Breezy's face is gone from the window because climbing to the top of the sofa to reach the sill is better done with a younger, more agile body. Now, an occasional trip to an agility trial is just to meet old friends. In a way, Breezy's changes have paralleled ours. Breezy came into our lives when Lu and I were entering our 50's - a time when aging had yet to take its toll. 16 years later like Breezy - we take life at a slower, wiser pace.
Not all has changed with Breezy. I remember the 6-week-old puppy that clambered over her littermates to greet a stranger and to give a gentle kiss. Breezy still treats every stranger as a friend. And though her face is now missing from the window, my coming home is still rewarded by a kiss just as gentle as the first. Something else that hasn't changed is the way Breezy will celebrate her 16th birthday. She'll get a bowl of vanilla ice cream (low fat) topped with maple syrup that will be devoured just as completely as it was 15 years ago. A reward too small for all the joy that Breezy has brought us!

They earned two more legs at the '98 Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, where Breezy placed 36th out of the 91 20" dogs. Breezy and Jerry are looking forward to the Nationals in 2000.
