Designed by Chet Jezierski
Sponsored by the Beardie Agility Diehards
"The Diehard Agility Trophy is established to honor the highest scoring bearded collie in Excellent level agility. The trophy features an original Chet Jezierski color drawing of beardies doing agility and is imbedded in acrylic and mounted on a walnut base. Plaques attached to the base allow the names of the winners to be permanently engraved. Designed by Chet Jezierski, it is offered and financed by freewill donations from the beardie agility community. Legs earned in Excellent A and B Standard, and Excellent A and B Jumper’s With Weaves (JWW) will be counted. To be eligible for this award, a beardie must earn at least three qualifying scores of 100 in Excellent Standard and JWW.
The scoring system is:
Each clean run will be awarded 1 point for every full second under Standard Course Time (SCT)
In addition, each Double Q (QQ) (qualifying in both Standard and JWW on the same day) will be awarded an additional 10 points.
Points will be totaled for each individual qualifying leg and QQ, and then added together to determine the dog’s total score.
If a tie in points occurs, the beardie with the highest average yards per second (YPS calculated to 0.01 seconds) in Standard and JWW will be considered the winner.
For Standard: YPS [course length in yards/(dog’s time on course – 5]
For JWW: YPS [Course length in yards/dog’s time on course]
YPS will be calculated for each individual qualifying leg and the average value determined for Standard and JWW. These two averages will then be added and the dog having the highest YPS will be declared the winner. If, after carrying out this procedure, the dogs remained tied, both will listed as the winners for that year."

The Lightning Award
Sponsored by Lori Weinberg
The Lightning Award recognizes speed in AKC agility at the Masters’ level, for the fastest legs in Standard Masters or Masters Preferred and JWW Masters or Masters Preferred, during the year. Preferred scores must be for a Veteran, age seven or over. The award is sponsored by Lori Weinberg to honor Rocky, MACH PACH Chaniam Creag MXS MJG MXP3 MXPB MJP7 MJPS PAX XF. The custom steel award features a shadow figure of a Bearded Collie stretched over a jump. Yards per second will be used for scoring purposes. The five fastest legs for each dog in Masters Standard and JWW (regular or preferred) are selected. The high and low values of these five legs are dropped and the remaining three values are averaged. The averages for Standard and JWW are added to get the dog’s total score. The dog with the highest total score is the winner. In the case of a tie, multiple trophies will be given. This award was approved by the Board in December of 2015.

"An annual award certificate is established for the top bearded collie in each level of Standard agility. In Novice A, Novice B, Open, and Excellent A (now called "Excellent"), legs leading to titles will be scored, no matter the year in which they were earned. In these levels, a beardie will be eligible for the Standard award only in the year in which the title is earned. For beardies competing in Excellent B (now called "Masters"), all legs earned during the current year will be scored and there is no requirement for a title to be earned in order to be eligible for the Excellent B ("Masters") Standard award.
Scoring:
Novice A - Excellent: The scores of the three legs leading to the title will be summed and the beardie with the highest total score will be the winner. If a tie in score occurs, YPS will be calculated (to 0.01 seconds) for each of the three title legs and the results averaged. The winner is the beardie with the highest average YPS. If a tie remains after this calculation, all those tied will be declared the winners of the award for that year.
Masters: A beardie accrues 5 points for each leg earned during the calendar year and one point for each full second under SCT. Ties in score will be broken by the YPS calculation specified above." 05/99-03

Competition in FAST was initiated on January 1, 2007. In order to qualify, a team must accumulate a certain number of points (50 for Novice, 55 for Open, 60 for Excellent) and successfully complete a distance challenge in a fixed amount of time (for 20" dogs, 32 seconds are allowed; preferred competitors get 3 additional seconds).; Each obstacle on the course is assigned a point value. The maximum number of points possible is 80; no one attained a perfect score in 2007. Beardies have proved to be quite adept at this fast paced and challenging game of strategy. The number of FAST titles decreased (76 in 2007, the first year of FAST competition vs 51 in 2008).
For each class the average scores have been tabulated; for Excellent B only, the number of legs earned is indicated. The BCCA Agility committee is considering adding FAST awards to the agility program

Time 2 Beat (T2B), initiated on 1 July 2011, is a combination course of Standard and Jumpers With Weaves. While dogs of any skill level (i.e., novice, open, excellent) are allowed to compete in T2B, to be successful you will need to demonstrate an advanced level of skills.
To earn a T2B title a dog will need 15 Qs and one hundred points. Points are awarded as follows: The first place dog will earn 10 points. All other qualifying dogs with a time that is within 10% of the time of the first place dog will receive 9 points. If a qualifying dog’s time is within 20% of the fastest time (the Time To Beat) they will earn 8 points, and so on all the way down to 90%.
139 Beardies earned a total of 3,195 legs in the Regular, Preferred, FAST, T2B and Premier classes in all breed and Specialty competition; 106 competed in the regular classes with 33 in Preferred and 12 in both. 104 of these teams accounted for 308 total titles (58 Novice, 60 Open, 33 Excellent, 113 Masters, 26 Championships, 13 T2B and 3 TQX). Four teams each completed two MACHs within the competition year: Lawrence Dalan and MACH5/6 Pip (Wigglesworth Great Expectations), Lori Weinberg and MACH6/7 Blade (Camerons On The Cutting Edge), Debby Alexander and MACH4/5 McKenzie (Wynsum Queen Of Diamonds N’ The Ruff), and Janice Leverenz and MACH4/5 Smitty (Wynsum Rhythm And Brews). Six teams competed at the 2016 AKC Invitational held in Orlando, FL in December; Lori and Blade made the finals in the 20” class and placed 5th. 16 Teams have qualified for 2016 AKC National Championships to be held in Perry, GA in March, 2017. AKC introduced entry level test titles for agility, ACT1/2, which were earned by two Beardies. 2016 was the second year of competition in the Premier classes. Although 17 Beardies earned either Premier Standard or JWW* legs this year, the first title remains to be completed.
*Lawrence Dalan and Pip completed the first Premier Jumpers Dog title on July 16, 2017.
March 24-26, 2017 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, Georgia
To enter a dog must have earned at least 4QQs (qualify in standard and JWW on the same day 4 times), 20
qualifying legs in standard and JWW (which can include the QQlegs), and 600 MACH points (1 MACH point = 1 full second
under standard course time) between December 1, 2015 and November 30, 2016.
16 Beardie teams met this high standard and were eligible to enter.

The Quest
Our quest started on December 1, 2015, the start of the point and QQ accumulation to qualify. Divot and I had just moved into Master classes, and truthfully, we were not a very consistent team. We were struggling with off courses, contact issues, and the ever-lasting “NO STAY” at the start line. I dutifully set up my tracking spreadsheet and probably entered more trials than I should have at the beginning of the year; but knowing that I would be taking the summer off, I was bound and determined to qualify before my summer break. Note to self – it is very unwise to put that kind of pressure on yourself. About 3 months into the qualifying period, we were only at a single QQ, contacts were better but still “NO STAY” at the start line – which caused me to be behind which resulted in off courses. I truthfully don’t remember which one of my dear agility friends told me this – but the bottom line was that her advice was to just skip worrying about the stay and just boom him and run. That was our turning point. Gone was the tension and the off courses, and the Q’s starting to come much more consistently. Divot was right – stays at the start line are overrated.
June 19, 2016 – we did it! All qualified for Nationals!
The Event
This was not my first time competing at NAC, so I knew a little of what to expect. But still, the sheer magnitude of the fairgrounds, arenas, number of dogs, noise and commotion is just overwhelming. Divot is a high drive but sensitive dog. I have to admit I was concerned about the effect the environment would have on him and our somewhat newly founded consistency.
Day 1 – Practice Round Oh yeah – just about everything I worried about happened and more. Divot was higher than a kite, shot out of my release at a newly found speed. Dropped bars, missed every contact – in fact – I had to repeat the teeter 3 times! Not exactly the start I was hoping for.
Day 1 – Premier Course Much better result. Wrong end of the tunnel, my fault, but the rest was beautiful. Whew.
Day 2 & 3 Just one little thing on each course. A rare dropped bar, an offcourse and another wrong end of the tunnel.
Reflections
Truthfully, I have to admit that I was disappointed in our performance. It wasn’t like I expected to win the event, but I felt that we had been successful enough to put up a good show. Let me clarify, that I was not disappointed in Divot. He is the most amazing performance dog I could ever imagine. He loves the game beyond belief. He has unrelenting drive and a joy that is unmatched. There are so many memories I will cherish about the 2017 NAC. The sheer joy of being a part of such an enormous event. (Kudos to AKC for orchestrating such a well-organized trial of this size) Watching some absolutely amazing agility teams giving it all out on the course. Watching the challenge rounds, hearing the crowds cheer – all for the love of the game. Then, of course, watching the finals – seeing teams coming together and embracing the moment.
My take-aways
To close – I feel blessed to have such an amazing athletic partner who will play relentlessly. I think that anyone who competes in agility should experience NAC at least once in their lifetime.
The 2016 AKC Invitational Championships was held in Orlando, FL in December. The point accumulation year for this event ran from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. Standings are determined by the number of MACH points (full seconds under standard course time) and QQs earned (qualifying in Standard and JWW on the same day; this number is then multiplied by 10 and added to the number of MACH points). Sixty two Beardies earned at least one MACH point during the qualifying period. The top five in the breed standings receive a first round invitation to compete. If the top five all competed in the Regular classes, a sixth invitation is sent to the top dog of the breed competing in the Preferred classes. If any of the five decline to attend, invitations may be issued to Beardies ranked 6-10.
Congratulations to Lori Weinberg and Blade, Larry Dalan and Pip, Janice Leverenz and Smitty, Kathy Tomlinson and Rhia, and Jeff Ipser and ReZoom.
Congratulations to Tracy Corey and Snow (Ha’Penny Harwood Ode To Choi), top Beardie in the Preferred Classes..
