BCCA Awards for 2017

Joanne Williamson and Libby Myers-Buhite

Diehard Trophy - Overall Excellence in AKC Agility, both in Standard and Jumpers with Weaves

Designed by Chet Jezierski

Sponsored by the Beardie Agility Diehards

The BCCA honors the top agility teams at each competition level (Novice/Open/Excellent/Masters) in both regular Standard and Jumpers With Weaves (JWW) and Veteran Beardies competing in the Preferred classes. At least one owner of each Beardie must be a BCCA member to be eligible for these awards.

"The Diehard Agility Trophy is established to honor the highest scoring bearded collie in Excellent level agility. The trophy features an original Chet Jezierski color drawing of beardies doing agility and is imbedded in acrylic and mounted on a walnut base. Plaques attached to the base allow the names of the winners to be permanently engraved. Designed by Chet Jezierski, it is offered and financed by freewill donations from the beardie agility community. Legs earned in Excellent A and B Standard, and Excellent A and B Jumper’s With Weaves (JWW) will be counted. To be eligible for this award, a beardie must earn at least three qualifying scores of 100 in Excellent Standard and JWW.

The scoring system is:
Each clean run will be awarded 1 point for every full second under Standard Course Time (SCT) In addition, each Double Q (QQ) (qualifying in both Standard and JWW on the same day) will be awarded an additional 10 points.
Points will be totaled for each individual qualifying leg and QQ, and then added together to determine the dog’s total score.
If a tie in points occurs, the beardie with the highest average yards per second (YPS calculated to 0.01 seconds) in Standard and JWW will be considered the winner. For Standard: YPS [course length in yards/(dog’s time on course – 5]
For JWW: YPS [Course length in yards/dog’s time on course]
YPS will be calculated for each individual qualifying leg and the average value determined for Standard and JWW. These two averages will then be added and the dog having the highest YPS will be declared the winner. If, after carrying out this procedure, the dogs remained tied, both will listed as the winners for that year."

The Denia Award for Standard Agility

Designed by Patricia White Cunningham

Sponsored by Glenn Hamilton and Emily Venator

"An annual agility competition trophy, donated by Glenn Hamilton and Emily Venator in the name of the first bearded collie to obtain an AKC Agility title, Am/Can CH Melville’s Poetry in Motion TT HIC NA CGC ADC FbDCH, is awarded annually to the bearded collie achieving the highest point total by earning titles in the standard agility classes through the MX. Only legs leading to titles will be counted.

The scoring will be based on the following sliding scale:

95-97 5
93-94 4

If a tie occurs in point total, the tie breaking mechanism will be to calculate the average yps (yps = course yardage/(dog's time - 5) ) for each dog's individual legs and calculate the average of these to 0.01seconds. The winner will be the dog with the higher yps average. If the dogs remained tied after this procedure has been carried out, both will be listed as winners of the award for that year." 05/11, 08/95-19

The Lightning Award

Sponsored by Lori Weinberg

The Lightning Award recognizes speed in AKC agility at the Masters’ level, for the fastest legs in Standard Masters or Masters Preferred and JWW Masters or Masters Preferred, during the year.  Preferred scores must be for a Veteran, age seven or over.  The award is sponsored by Lori Weinberg to honor Rocky, MACH PACH Chaniam Creag MXS MJG MXP3 MXPB MJP7 MJPS PAX XF. The custom steel award features a shadow figure of a Bearded Collie stretched over a jump. Yards per second will be used for scoring purposes.  The five fastest legs for each dog in Masters Standard and JWW (regular or preferred) are selected.  The high and low values of these five legs are dropped and the remaining three values are averaged. The averages for Standard and JWW are added to get the dog’s total score. The dog with the highest total score is the winner.  In the case of a tie, multiple trophies will be given.  This award was approved by the Board in December of 2015.

Standard Agility for 2017

"An annual award certificate is established for the top bearded collie in each level of Standard agility. In Novice A, Novice B, Open, and Excellent A (now called "Excellent"), legs leading to titles will be scored, no matter the year in which they were earned. In these levels, a beardie will be eligible for the Standard award only in the year in which the title is earned. For beardies competing in Excellent B (now called "Masters"), all legs earned during the current year will be scored and there is no requirement for a title to be earned in order to be eligible for the Excellent B ("Masters") Standard award.

Scoring:
Novice A - Excellent: The scores of the three legs leading to the title will be summed and the beardie with the highest total score will be the winner. If a tie in score occurs, YPS will be calculated (to 0.01 seconds) for each of the three title legs and the results averaged. The winner is the beardie with the highest average YPS. If a tie remains after this calculation, all those tied will be declared the winners of the award for that year.

Masters: A beardie accrues 5 points for each leg earned during the calendar year and one point for each full second under SCT. Ties in score will be broken by the YPS calculation specified above." 05/99-03

FAST (Fifteen and Send Time)

Competition in FAST was initiated on January 1, 2007. In order to qualify, a team must accumulate a certain number of points (50 for Novice, 55 for Open, 60 for Excellent) and successfully complete a distance challenge in a fixed amount of time (for 20" dogs, 32 seconds are allowed; preferred competitors get 3 additional seconds).; Each obstacle on the course is assigned a point value. The maximum number of points possible is 80; no one attained a perfect score in 2007. Beardies have proved to be quite adept at this fast paced and challenging game of strategy. The number of FAST titles decreased (76 in 2007, the first year of FAST competition vs 51 in 2008).

For each class the average scores have been tabulated; for Excellent B only, the number of legs earned is indicated. The BCCA Agility committee is considering adding FAST awards to the agility program

Time 2 Beat (T2B)

Time 2 Beat (T2B), initiated on 1 July 2011, is a combination course of Standard and Jumpers With Weaves. While dogs of any skill level (i.e., novice, open, excellent) are allowed to compete in T2B, to be successful you will need to demonstrate an advanced level of skills.

To earn a T2B title a dog will need 15 Qs and one hundred points. Points are awarded as follows: The first place dog will earn 10 points. All other qualifying dogs with a time that is within 10% of the time of the first place dog will receive 9 points. If a qualifying dog’s time is within 20% of the fastest time (the Time To Beat) they will earn 8 points, and so on all the way down to 90%.

AKC - American Kennel Club Report for 2017

Joanne Williamson

141 Beardies earned a total of 2,918 legs in the Regular, Preferred, FAST, T2B and Premier classes in all breed and Specialty competition; 97 competed in the Regular classes with 39 in Preferred and 5 in both. 106 of these teams accounted for 297 total titles (100 standard; 108 JWW; 20 CH; 4 PAX; 41 FAST; 12 T2B; 2 TQX; 4 Premier; 6 ACT). Four teams each completed two MACHs within the competition year: Lawrence Dalan with both MACH7/8 Pip (Wigglesworth Great Expectations) and MACH2/3 Bing (Wigglesworth Pride And Prejudice), Jeff Ipser with MACH 7/8 Rezoom (Wigglesworth Super Smooth Operator), and Janice Leverenz with MACH6/7 Smitty (Wynsum Rhythm And Brews).  Six teams competed at the AKC Invitational held in Orlando, FL in December 2017.  Lori Weinberg and Blade (Camerons On The Cutting Edge) were the top scoring Beardie team for the second straight year and made the finals in the 20” class.  15 Teams qualified for 2018 AKC National Championships held in Reno, NV in March 2018.  2017 was the third year of competition in the Premier classes and saw the completion of the first Beardie titles.  Lawrence Dalan and Bing had the honor of earning the first Premier title when they completed their PJD in July.  Jan Leverenz and Smitty were not far behind, earning the first PAD at the end of August.  Larry and Bing then became the first to finish both Premier titles in November when they also earned their PAD.

Congratulations to the qualifiers for the 2018 AKC National Agility Championships!

The AKC National Agility Championship is a prestigious event where the top qualifying agility teams in the nation compete each year to be crowned “National Champions”.  What an extraordinary event to attend and watch, let alone in which to compete! The National Agility Championship, or NAC, is held each March. The venue rotates between Reno, NV, Tulsa, OK and Perry, GA, giving qualified dog teams the opportunity to compete at the National trial near home every three years.

In 2018, to qualify you had to compete at the Master Agility level and have completed the following requirements between Dec. 1, 2016 and Nov. 30, 2017:

During the previous year, Emma and I had narrowly missed qualifying for the NAC which showed me that we can compete at this level. In 2017, I wasn’t sure we would be able to qualify as we ended up taking six months off from agility while Emma whelped and raised puppies. When we started trialing again in September, she was running well, and we were able to get it done. I was thrilled! We were going to the Championship!! Just to qualify was a huge accomplishment. Only 15 Beardie teams qualified for the 2018 National: ten at the Standard jump heights and five in Preferred. Congratulations to all!

The four-day NAC was held at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center in Nevada.

Thursday was set up and check-in day for most competitors. Walking into the Event Center and seeing all the rings, with the flags of all the states represented hung around the arena walls, is a sight I will always remember. Our crating location was determined by a lottery draw and we were lucky enough to be assigned premium crating in the Main Building. We found our spot and got set up. The magnitude of the experience began to seep in as I stood in line waiting to be officially checked in and receive our bar-coded tag for the weekend. With nearly 1,000 dogs competing in four different rings simultaneously, the bar-coded tag is your entry to play. I was hopeful that there would be other Beardie teams attending (where were you guys?) But we were the only one. We were determined to represent our breed as best we could! There were many vendor booths on the main arena platform, so we finished the day with a bit of shopping, knowing that for the next couple of days we would be totally focused on agility.

The next three days started bright and early at six a.m. with the course map distribution followed by the general walkthroughs of those courses. The height specific walkthroughs started at seven-thirty a.m. and was done in groups of about 50 competitors at a time. When all of the walkthroughs were finally done, the competition would start and each team ran according to their ‘running order number’, which could mean right away or four hours later! Finding a marker dog was hard – soooo many Border Collies – but we were an easy marker dog for others.

Friday started with the warm-up run, which gave us a chance to get accustomed to the rings and footing. The Premier Standard Sweepstakes course, judged by Susan Leitner, was in the afternoon and included all the challenges you would expect to see on a Premier course. It was a fun run and Emma was on her game. She did everything I asked of her. Unfortunately, that included going to the backside of a jump (rather than the face of it) right at the end of the run. Good dog, bad handler = NQ for Team Emma.

Saturday was the first official day of the championship rounds. As we came into the arena that morning, the electricity in the air was palpable! First up for us was our Jumpers with Weaves course. It was a nice, flowing course judged by Peter Liu. We ran near the end of the pack, giving us the opportunity to observe that many teams were getting an offcourse entry into the tunnel. When it was our turn to run, I was so careful handling that section of the course that I mishandled another part and we ended up with one deduction. Our Standard run was not until the afternoon, which gave me some time to quiet my nerves, so when we went back in the ring we were ready and able to put together our first clean run of the day with a good time!

Sunday, the last day of the trial, arrived too quickly. My goal for the day was to run for a personal record and to enjoy every minute of that last run together at Nationals. The Hybrid course looked fast and fun and was judged by Susan Stephon. We were near the top of the running order so we only had a short wait before entering the ring. In less than a minute, we were done and had achieved our second clean run ribbon for Team Emma! I was delighted we had done well and sad that it was all over.

The grand finale of the NAC is Sunday afternoon when they hold the challenger rounds and then the finals. The arena was full of spectators and the atmosphere charged! All the dog and handler teams who had made it to the final rounds were incredible and amazing to watch. World Team members down to weekend warriors were competing for the coveted final prize of National Champion. Those who ultimately won at each jump height were well deserving of the achievement and accolades. We left Reno proud of what we had accomplished at the National Agility Championship and inspired to try again in years to come!

AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Invitational Standings - June 2017

Larry Dalan with Bing and Pip, Jennifer Phillips with Ryan, Lori Weinberg with Blade, Trudy Wisner with Poppet, Sharon Ipser with ReZoom

Larry Dalan and Bing (Wigglesworth Pride and Prejudice) have topped the 2016-2017 Invitational standings for Beardies competing in the regular classes at the Master level. Trudy Wisner and Poppet (Lil’ Clove Hello Poppet) earned the highest number of Invitational points for Beardies competing in the preferred Master classes. They, along with Larry’s other dog Pip, Jeff Ipser and Rezoom, Jennifer Phillips and Ryan, and Lori Weinberg and Blade, have received 1st round invitations to compete at the AKC Invitational Agility Championships to be held December 15-17, 2017 in Orlando, Florida. If any of them decline, the Beardies standing in the 5th-10th positions become eligible to receive invitations so that each breed may have a maximum of 6 representatives in the competition.  Congratulations to all of these fine teams and the best of luck to those who decide to make the trip to Florida to compete.

Blade

Blade’s haul from the 2017 AKC Agility Invitational. 4 Clean rounds, Top Bearded Collie at 2017 Agility Invitational and a Finalist for 20”class (seeded #7). It is particularly thrilling to see that the cumulative times for the 4 rounds showed that Blade as #7 and the # 6 seed and the #5 seed where separated by only 0.53 seconds! That could have been easily made up in just one tight turn for us. I have to say we were right in the thick of things! Still on cloud nine!

What a trip to Orlando! Blade and I ran hard and gave it our all. True honor to make it into the Finals again competing against some really great teams. Just bad luck in the finals that Blade turned the wrong way on the jump before the DW. I hung back to prevent the back jump but couldn’t recover. I have to say that 2017 has been one tremendous year for the two of us.

Lori Weinberg and Blade
Trudy Wisner and Poppet

Congratulations to our 15 Beardies who have earned 21 championships in 2017
