BEARDED COLLIE CLUB OF AMERICA
Courses by Dale Mahoney
After a soggy weekend start to the National Specialty, the skies cleared, the sun came out and we had perfect weather for the agility trial on Monday (and the rest of the week of the Specialty)! A rare gift in western Washington in the fall! The weather was only a worry because the agility trial was being held outdoors on a manicured, grass soccer field at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey, a short 15 minutes from the Host Hotel, and running agility in a downpour is neither fun nor safe. Thankfully, we didn’t have to deal with that.
Our entry for the trial was small – only 16 dogs and their handlers – but everyone pitched in throughout the day, from set up to tear down, to keep the trial running smoothly and efficiently. Thanks must go out to the Committee (Jack & Libby Buhite, Jana Dozet, Sharon Prassa) and to so many of our Club members (Joanne Williamson, Janice Kehoe, Pam Harris, Wanda Packard, Patsy Sullivan) to name just a few. Both our Trial Secretary and Judge complimented the Club, exhibitors and spectators for being so willing to help out wherever it was needed. From their stories, this isn’t always the case at small Specialty trials.
A special thank you must be given to our Judge, Paula Ratozza, for stepping in at the last minute to fill in for Dale Maloney who had to quarantine due to Covid exposure on Friday! A peril of running a trial during a pandemic! Dale’s courses were flowy and challenging and Paula kept the day moving along with a smile.
The last runs of the day were the Agility Relay which, as always, was entertaining and fun. All in all, it was a very good day and everyone seemed to have a good time, even those who didn’t get a Q!

The fun relay course had 11 obstacles, including 7 jumps and four tunnels with several off-course challenges. Five teams of three Beardies each ran the course. Scores were determined by time + faults. Each fault (eg knocked bar, off course, or starting before your team mate crossed the finish line counted as 2 points). Refusals were not counted.
The top four teams from the relay include these strategizing whizzes and their Beardies:
1st Place: The Galloping Geezers (Time: 76.17' + 2 = 78.17)
Lynne Corn and Oboe, Jack Buhite and Frolic, Joanne Williamson and Vika
2nd Place: Paisley's Vivacious Frolic(Time: 70.65' + 8 = 78.65)
Meg Naylor and Paisley, Joanne Williamson and Vika, Jack Buhite and Frolic
3rd Place: The Tri-State Racers (Time: 80.47' + 4 = 84.47)
Janice Kehoe and Cricket, Suzi Beddoe and Bette, Pam Harris and Kona
4th Place: Done in a Flash (Time:98.01' + 12 = 110.01)
Pam Harris and Nike, Patty Cahill and Dream, Pat Cahill and Della
Sixteen agility folk attended our Annual BAD Dinner. The hotel prepared a lovely buffet of tri-tip, pasta with pesto, roasted potatoes, eggplant slices in tomato sauce, southwest corn salad, and caesar salad, followed by a decadent chocolate concoction. It was declared delicious by all. We wore our masks while settling in and serving ourselves dinner. The hotel staff was marvelous, fetching drinks and keeping everything fresh. Each attendee received a sturdy, colorful tugtoy, somet made by Pat White and some donated by Jana Dozet and Libby Myers-Buhite.
During dessert, Joanne Williamson presented several BCCA Certificates, including 30 year awards to Jack Buhite, to Patsy Sullivan, and me was well as Versatility Excellent Awards to Meg Naylor and Pamela Harris.
We congratulated our Highs in Trial, and Joanne Williamson presented the High Combined Award and High Combined Champion Award from our trial to Pam Harris and Kona. Suzi Beddoe and Emma had received the Oldest Qualifying Veteran Award earlier in the day.
Lynne Corn introduced a new award, the "Geezer Award", which was presented for outstadning achievement during the trial and relay.
Pam Harris won this award with Joanne Williamson being a close second. The only senior moment was Jack Buhite's momentary loss of direction during one of his runs.
Libby then named Lynne Corn wthe BAD Member of the Year for her great sense of fun and bringing joy to others.
