Wow!! What a great bunch of working, agile, bouncing Beardies performing in the agility ring at our Specialty.
I was so proud to be a part of this agility event. The Beardies were exceptional. The average amount of time the novice Beardies had spent on training was 3 months. That is a very sort amount of time to train and still have such a great showing. Many of these Beardies actually never, I repeat, NEVER, had been on any REAL contact obstacles until the run-throughs on Saturday. And the amazing thing is they never flinched and just went about the course like they had been doing this forever.
The handlers are to be commended also. Our course space was barely legal and very tight. That meant the handlers had to make tighter turns and had very little "free" space. It was especially difficult for the higher classes of excellent and open, but the handlers were cooool about it and if there were complaints, they never reached my ears. Good sportsmanship was in abundance. The audience was patient as we changed courses and congratulated each Beardie and handler after their run.
The mistakes that were made causing most of the NQs were basically handler-induced errors, such as touching the Beardie's collar to assist them over the see-saw or overhandling with pushes into tunnels by legs, etc. All of these will pass with a little experience. I truly cannot find any fault to elaborate on. Agility was invented for our Beardies and anyne who watched the event can testify to that. The "new" AKC rules of refusals and runbys being scored eqully managed to NQ some of the Beardies, but that is happening at a lot of agility events.
I look forward to hearing from lots more of the agility handlers now that we have met. I also look forward to seeing more of you in the agility ring either as a fellow "competitor" or as a team I judge.

The stats were as follows, we had 30 Beardies entered in our Agility Trial. 28 ran and 12 qualified, actually above the average on qualifiers. Many thanks to all the handlers who pitched in and helped move equipment and roll or tape matting, during our set-up time and or run through time. Many thanks to our Florida club for coming through and helping paint and decorate the obstacles as well as our club's blessings for the money used to be sure our course was indeed, magical. But please allow me to thank my "Beardie slave," husband Rick, who nailed and sawed and moved and stored equipment for the past year. He aslso served as trial secretary and more than once as a cheerleader for me. He also has demonstrated an overwhelming love of the Bearded Collie breed, as well as a great deal of respect for all the Beardie people he met at the Specialty. He was impressed at the friendliness and willingness of the more seasoned Beardie owners toward him, a self-proclaimed "newer-comer" to the breed.
