In April of 2010, the BCCA Board approved amended scoring systems for our annual agility awards. Major changes included elimination of placement points from all scoring systems and changing the eligibility for the Novice A-Excellent A standard and JWW awards to the year in which a title in that class is finished.
Recognition is also given to teams competing at each level in Standard and JWW. The JWW awards are named in memory of Ryan, the first Beardie to earn an agility title and are supported by Beth Canner.

FAST is a new AKC titling game. Competition in this game was initiated on January 1, 2007. In order to qualify, a team must accumulate a certain number of points (50 for Novice, 55 for Open, 60 for Excellent) and successfully complete a distance challenge in a fixed amount of time (for 20" dogs, 32 seconds are allowed; preferred competitors get 3 additional seconds). Each obstacle on the course is assigned a point value. The maximum number of points possible is 80. Beardies have proved to be quite adept at this fast paced and challenging game of strategy.
The BCCA Agility committee will be considering adding FAST awards to the agility program in the coming years.
2010 Statistics 165 Beardies earned a total of 2,345 legs in the Regular, Preferred and FAST classes with 1,102 placements in all breed and Specialty competition. Compared to 2009, these numbers represent a 7% increase in total Beardies earning legs (165 vs 154), a 16% increase in the total number of legs (2,345 vs 2,007) and a 10% increase in the number of placements (1,102 vs 997). 108 of these teams accounted for 229 total titles (86 Novice, 64 Open, 36 Excellent, 30 Masters, and 10 Championships). This represents a 4% decrease from 2009 in the number of teams earning titles (108 vs 113) but a 3% increase in the total number of titles (229 vs 222). The number of Novice and Championship titles earned in 2010 was lower than in 2009 but increases of 8-16% were seen in all other categories. The level of participation in the Regular classes was up 5% (134 vs 127) and in the Preferred classes, 14% (31 vs 27). Five teams competed at the 5th AKC Agility Invitational in Long Beach, CA in December, 2010. A record number of Beardies (11) qualified for the AKC National Championships held in Lexington, VA in April, 2011; two teams qualified for the Preferred Nationals competition. Jeff Ipser and Zoom (Wigglesworth Super Sonic) earned the first Beardie MACH11 and MACH12 titles and had the most QQs (69). Linda Porter and Mika (Foxlane’s Mika At Tweeddale) also earned two MACHs during 2010 (MACH2 & 3) and tied with Zoom and Jeff for the most TQs (9).
The 2011 AKC National Agility Championship was held April 1-3, 2011 at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. Dogs became eligible in the Regular category by earning at least 6 Double Qs and 400 MACH points from the Regular Excellent B Standard and Jumpers With Weaves classes during the qualifying period, December 1, 2009 through and including November 30, 2010. Dogs were again eligible to enter in the Preferred category by earning at least 6 Double Qs from the Preferred Excellent B Standard and JWW classes. A record number of Beardie teams qualified for the Nationals this year. This is awesome! Congratulations to all of you!

Sandy McDonald and Kip*Jan Leverenz and CH MACH C-ATCH8 Hops: “The AKC NAC was held in Lexington, VA at a huge horse park. Andrea Hobe and Colby, Linda Porter and Mika, Sandy McDonald and Kip, and Hops and I were the Beardie representatives at Nationals this year. I arrived on Wednesday night and set up on Thursday morning. The venue had 2 areas for the rings: a huge coliseum for 2 rings, vendors, and the finals on Sunday and a smaller barn for 3 rings. The distance was a long walk between rings 1 & 2 (coliseum) and 4, 5 & 6 (small barn) which made it very inconvenient to watch friends running in other jump heights. The coliseum check-in on Thursday was congested because handlers could sign up for T2B and the lines were very long. Then, we had to go to the small barn and get in line again to run T2B, which was crazy. On Friday, the State Tournament was run like a regular trial and that went smoothly. The big dogs were in the small barn and the small dogs ran in the coliseum. I had a few mistakes on those runs, but it was a great warm up. The NAC started early on Saturday and big dogs ran in the coliseum. I loved running there and had a great clean first run in JWW. My 2nd run was Std and we had another great run except for one bar down. On Sunday, we ran the hybrid course and were clean again. It was a great way to celebrate Hops’ 10th birthday. My final score was 295 and we placed 104/289 with 149 border collies in the 20” class.
“This was my first NAC and I was talked into going this year, so I didn’t know what to expect. It was a fantastic experience and I would go again if I qualified. Watching the Challenger and Finals Rounds was unbelievable! What phenomenal handlers and dogs! These last six months have given me wonderful memories to cherish—running Hops in the Eukanuba Invitational and the NAC! It doesn’t get any better than that.”
Andrea Hobe and MACH Colby: “I didn't think I was going to get to run at all because Colby was injured, but he got fixed just hours before his first run. It was a crazy weekend full of ups and downs for Colby and me, but it ended up being AWESOME!!! Colby placed 40th/289 with three clean runs and a score of 300.” :)
Sheila Franklin and ADCH-Bronze NATCH Bracey: “A BIG congratulations to all of the beardies and their handlers for making it to the nationals! Having run in two other venues, I know that it is an accomplishment! WELL DONE Andrea and Colby to run clean in ALL rounds especially with the boy less than 100% and your nerves likely worse due to it! A big shout out to Sandy and Kip as well. The NAC was Kip's retirement party and what a party it looked like it was! Nice way to go out. As Sandy said, ‘He has earned the right to take his place on the couch.’” :-)
Patti Bott and MACH Spice: “What a great feeling to see so many Beardie Teams qualify for the AKC Agility National. This is a breed that loves to compete and excels at this sport. Spice and I will be missing the big event this year due to our oldest dog passing the milestone of 16 years in January. Best wishes to all the teams that have the chance to compete in Virginia. It is the happy memories of the experience that will last not the scores or titles that we get with our teammates.”
Karen Barratt and CH MACH3 Miller: “Congratulations to all qualifiers and good luck to those going this year. Miller and I are opting out on the drive to the East coast. We will be thinking of each of you entered though. Go Beardies!!!”
Ann Chandoha and CH MACH2 Dru: “Dru and I send many congratulations to all of our AKC qualifiers!!! Lots of licks and hugs going your way!!!”
Bobbie Raguse and MACH2 Kira: “Congratulations to all AKC Nationals Qualifiers! Kira and I are proud to be in such great company! Kira and I won't be going to Virginia as I used up all my vacation when Bill had heart surgery the end of the year. But it was worth it. He's healthy and back to all of his activities, so we're sticking to local trials. Miss seeing all of you and wish all the best to those of you participating at the Nationals. I know you'll make us proud!”

Round 1 of the Invitational: I'm ringside at the Invitational and can report on the results of the first standard round. It was a tricky course with a couple of serpentine sequences. The round was won by Susan Garrett and her red Border Collie with a blazing time of 27.4 seconds. Linda and Mika were clean and are standing 22nd. Andrea and Colby had a lovely round but had a refusal called on them after the A frame. Karen and Miller, Jan and Hops, and Sarah and Wizard all had some problems getting around and hopefully will do better in JWW this afternoon. The Beardie standings after Round 2 (86 were entered/10 will make the finals): Linda and Mika are 9th. Andrea and Colby are 38th. Karen and Miller are 53rd. Jan and Hops are 63rd. Sarah and Wizard are 71st. All 5 Beardies qualified on the round 3 JWW course! Mika has moved up to the number 5 spot in the 20" height class cumulative. Round 4 just finished: Andrea and Colby and Jan and Hops ran clean. Linda and Mika, Karen and Miller, and Sarah and Wizard all had faults. So, unfortunately, there won't be a Beardie in the finals this year. Linda and Mika were the highest scoring Beardie for the third year in a row: Linda and Mika, 23rd, Andrea and Colby, 25th, Jan and Hops, 49th, Sarah and Wizard, 65th, Karen and Miller, 72nd. All the teams, whether they ran clean or not, did a great job representing our breed!
Andrea Hobe and Colby
This was my first trip to the AKC Invitationals and Colby (O'Duinnin Blacker N Coal MX MXJ NF HIC) and I had a blast! The venue was fabulous and the agility competitors were treated very well! They brought in real sod for the agility surface, which the dogs responded very well to. I think the Beardies represented our breed quite well on some pretty challenging courses. The days were long, but there were fabulous vendors and tons of things to do. Colby even got to do some dock diving at the end of each day. I was very nervous as I wasn't sure if we could rise to the occasion. I was so proud of Colby and I'm thrilled with his performance. I couldn't stop smiling the whole weekend! One of the best parts for me was when I finally got to take Colby to the beach for the first time. (If only you could see the look on Karen's face when I mentioned that I desperately wanted to take our perfectly groomed Beardies to the beach BEFORE the competition. She agreed without hesitation - what a trooper! It was great seeing old friends again and meeting new ones, of course, too! Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Beardies! What a great group of people we have in the BCCA. It was such a great trip. I'm so glad that I went as it was certainly an experience I will never forget!
Jan Leverenz and Hops
Getting the invitation to the Eukanuba Agility Invitational was one of the highlights in agility for me next to achieving a MACH with Hops. After a short discussion with my husband, he agreed we could drive to California. We left our house in Shelby Township, Michigan on Sunday, Nov 28 for the long trip to southern California. We had great weather for the drive and time to stop at the Grand Canyon for a little sightseeing on the way. We arrived in Long Beach on Wednesday, December 1 around 7 pm and checked into our motel a few blocks from the Convention Center. On Thursday, we went with Michigan friends and their dogs to the dog beach in Huntington Beach and had a great time wading and running in the surf. Then, Hops and I relaxed while Bob and a friend went golfing. On Friday, we were excited to get set up (after Bobʼs morning golf game), meet friends from the Midwest and the other Beardie entrants, and run the FAST warm-up round. We could feel the excitement building for the dogs and their handlers and everything was very well organized. It was great having assigned crating spaces, so we didnʼt have to worry about finding a spot for our dog. The rings were easy to get to and running on real grass was a pleasure. Everyone involved in running the trial was helpful and pleasant. I thought the courses were well designed and the difficulty was appropriate for that level of competition. Bob was assigned to course building both days and got a great lunch, a worker t-shirt, and an Invitational duffle bag as a gift. It was very exciting to watch the Final Round and cheer on the competitors. Three of my Michigan friends made it to the Finals and one came in 2nd in 8” dogs! All the Beardies and handlers did a great job and were wonderful ambassadors for our breed—super agility dogs. We almost had one in the Finals. Luckily, I had time between runs to visit with our President, Joanne Williamson, watch the Beardies in the breed ring, do shopping, and visit the Bearded Collie display at the Meet the Breeds booth. Our time in Long Beach was much too short and we left early Monday morning for the long drive home. Thankfully, we had perfect weather while in California and again for our return trip. It was an awesome experience and I will forever treasure the memories of running at the Invitational with my special Beardie, Hops—the best brown Beardie in the trial!
Sarah Halsey and Wizard
This will not be easy for me to write, as I probably had a very different purpose and emotions than the other Beardie handlers at the Invitational. Two were first-timers. Two were repeaters with fairly young Beardies. Only Wizzie was 12-1/2 years old, the only one to have competed in all five Invitationals, and the only one who would be retired at this event. For me, this meant Wizzie would have only FIVE more times in the ring, EVER! After trialing with Wizzie for over 11 years, it was very hard to imagine not running behind my little wind-up racecar forever. We people form habits exactly like our dogs do and trialing has been such a fun habit for both of us! Wizzie is so sweet, so silly, so fun-loving, and so far from perfect, too, and yet he did manage to accomplish many titles! Wizzie has always put his all into everything he did and does! Thank goodness he is still so young at heart.
The Agility Invitational, especially being back inside again where conformation rings and vendors are (as opposed to last year in a tent in the parking lot with buckets of rain all weekend!) has an aura all its own. It is great for agility to have a championship where many non Border Collies have a chance to get into the Finals and the public can see a huge variety of breeds perform. It is crowded, noisy, and fun! There was great camaraderie among the Beardie contingent this year! I so enjoyed meeting Jan and Bob Leverenz and Andrea Hobe. Their Beardies made them proud! Jan organized us all for the Beardie group shot, which actually was very funny as we tried to get 5 Beardies to hold still! Doug got it all on video, too! It was wonderful to see Karen Barratt again with Miller and Linda Porter with Mika, who both had great runs. Joanne Williamson was our "roving reporter" as well as "kennel help" for her Gordon Setter friend, who actually got 2nd in the 24" Finals! Wizzie was crated with other breeds belonging to friends who have been close for a dozen years or so. It made both him and me very happy to have so many supporters there this final time. Many of the volunteer workers were our California judges and friends. Wizzie, being an ultra outgoing (yes, ultra noisy!) people-dog, was in 7th heaven!
Although I walked into the ring for each of Wizzie's 5 runs totally aware that each was part of only a handful more left for us, the minute we left the start line it was all fun and games again! Wizzie had his typical trial results: one Q ribbon (now a framed memento!), two runs lost by knock downs, and one simply awful run! I got another tangible memento a little later on. One of the AKC reps, Carrie de Young, had taken a photo of Wizzie doing his favorite obstacle, the Poles, in his final run, Round 4-Hybrid. Since the Poles were the 3rd from last obstacle, this was literally a picture of Wizzie at almost the end of his trialing career. It was even put on the AKC website with other agility photos from each Round! I was SO proud Wizzie was there! And then the final surprise came when a copy of this photo was sent to me by Carrie, who is now head of AKC agility. She has been a friend ever since she and I competed together, she with her Tervuren and me with my GSD, Purple. And so this last Invitational had all the fun I wanted Wizzie to have at his final trial, trying to jump on friends passing by, excitedly barking from the bleachers, thrilled to be in the ring, and just ecstatic about it all! That is what I wanted most of all and that sure made it fun for me! Although I choked up as we packed up and pulled out of the rapidly.emptying parking lot for the last time ever, I knew I could hug my funny little shaggy dog and thank my lucky stars that I have Wizzie still. And I just hope Wizzie will just keep on barking and barking and barking!!!!
