Judge: LaVonda Herring
Chair: Sheila Franklin
Committee:
"How many beardies does it take....to play agilty at the LARGEST Beardie Specialty Agility Trial EVER??? EIGHTY! That's right folks...EIGHTY bouncing beardies will be bouncing over the jumps (or if you are Joby boinging!), bounding over teeters, aframes and dogwalks (and NONE will BOUNCE OVER A CONTACT!), wiggle wagging through weave poles and lest we forget they are beardies....BARKING for joy! 2014 has surpassed the two previously largest specialty trials-2007 on Frederick, MD and 2013 in St. Louis, MO. For those of you who love stats....in 2007, 76 beardies were entered for a total of 205 runs over 3 classes; in 2013, 71 beardies competed in 4 classes for a total of 221 runs and in 2014 we have 80 beardies with 207 runs in 3 classes. None of the above numbers include the relay since it is not considered an official part of the trial...although we ALL KNOW IT IS a very important part of our specialty agility!" - Sheila Franklin, Trial Chair

The 2014 BCCA Specialty Agility Trial was a day filled with fun, surprises, comradery and success for every team competing! We saw the largest entry ever at a BCCA trial with 80 beardies entered for 207 runs.
I had the pleasure of serving as the Chair and have received many thanks and accolades for a great day, but the real thanks and accolades must go to, what I would term, one of the hardest working committees ever! Ruth Bryden, Sonja Blanchard, Claire Cifarelli, Andrea Hobe, Beth Kortze, Linda Porter, Jenny Scheytt, Karen Sporny, Patti Waddell and Trudy Wisner truly outdid themselves. My goal as the Chair, and one I clearly communicated to each committee member when they agreed to serve, was to put on a day that would be memorable for each and every exhibitor. This incredible group embraced that concept from day one and every decision we made was with that in mind. We firmly believed that a Specialty trial should be special and not just another trial. We knew we wanted a day that would bring surprise and smiles to the exhibitors even as the day wore on. Trudy Wisner came up with a clever t-shirt design (Run Happy!) and, on her own, ordered them and sold them and donated 100% of the profits to the performance events. We worked hard for almost two years on the event and I know that we all went home with smiles on our faces and that was as a result of seeing the smiles on the exhibitors’ faces!
The day started out bright and early as the trial site (Bella Vista Training Center in Lewisberry PA) was about a 50 minute drive from the hotel. It is an indoor, dog specific venue with indoor, cushioned turf as the running surface with plenty of parking. When exhibitors arrived to check in, they found a table filled with large, personalized dog biscuits, one for every dog entered! They also received a goody bag that was filled with a variety of items such as toys, USA raised dog bones, water bottles with a beardie label, and much more, most of it beardie themed.
Lavonda Herring from NY was our judge and is known for her sense of humor and good nature at trials and she did not disappoint. She had assured us beforehand that she was the “Queen of Nesting” and she was! Jeff Ipser readily agreed to be our Chief Course Builder and he did a wonderful job turning them over in record time!
FAST was up first, giving everyone a chance to test out any equipment they chose and providing a nice chance to get on the turf as well. 25 out of 52 (48%) qualified. First place was captured by Jeff Ipser and Rezoom (Wigglesworth Super Smooth Operator) in Masters, Beth Scorzelli and Brew (Colquhoun’s Hurricane Brewin’) in Masters Preferred, Sonja Blanchard and Quincy (Lil’ Clove True Grit) in Excellent, Barbara Erway and Zuzu (Wigglesworth Sobe Wonder Girl) in Excellent Preferred, Andrea Hobe and Colby (O’Duinnin Blacker N Coal ) in Open, Beth Kortze and Vickie (Britannia Runaway Angel) in Open Preferred, Andrea Hobe and Brie (Estrella There’s A Breeze AllAround) in Novice B, Martha Fruehwald and Ice (Burlesque Ice Ice Baby) in Novice A, and Nancy May and Farley (Kamelott’s Wild Thing Farley) in Novice Preferred.
Standard was up next and 23 out of 63 (37%) qualified. First place honors went to Linda Porter and Mika (Fox Lane’s Mika At Tweeddale) in Masters, Beth Scorzelli and Brew in Masters P, John Youngblood and Razzles (Shadowfax’s Lone Star Belle) in Excellent, Diane Lipman and Allie (Wigglesworth Little Miss Sunshine) in Open, Nancy May and Farley in Open P, Martha Fruehwald and Ice in Novice A, and Patti Waddell and Bryce (Wynsum Knight Dreamweaver ) in Novice P.
Jumpers rounded out the day and 27 out of 66 (41%) qualified. We saw first places go to John Youngblood and Razzles in Masters, Beth Scorzelli and Brew in Excellent P, Casey Minner and Scarlett (Potterdale Jubilee Diamond ) in Open, Christa McChancey and Reagan (Blessings Mik-Ren Here’s Barking At Ewe Kid) in Open P, Patti Waddell and Chase (Chantilly’s Tyme Moves On Of XTC) in Novice B, Suzanne O’Malley and Maggie (Rivercity Georgia Magnolia May) in Novice A, and Nancy May and Granite (Kamelott’s Great Stone Face) in Novice P.
John Youngblood had two fabulous runs with Razzles and that netted him the High in Trial (HIT) awards in BOTH standard and JWW, while Jeff Ipser and Rezoom were awarded HIT in FAST! Sixteen beardies earned new titles including a MACH4 earned by Diane Lipman’s Kailey (Wigglesworth No Way Out). Out of 181 runs, an amazing 75 were qualifying!
In addition to the traditional HIT awards, this year we also awarded several special High Scoring awards, featuring beautiful rosettes along with hand thrown pottery vases. Kathy Defino and Nikki captured the High Scoring Novice A dog while Patti Waddell and Chase took home the High Scoring Novice B award. Andrea Hobe and Brie won the High Scoring Dog with a Breed Championship of Record, and Beth Scorzelli and the very versatile Brew snagged the High Scoring Veteran Dog.
We had no shortage of workers throughout the day and to show our appreciation, we treated them to a nice continental breakfast and a homemade soup and salad bar for lunch along with a variety of homemade cookies and other snacks for a mid-afternoon pick me up, all at no charge! Sonja Blanchard did an amazing job soliciting donations for a worker raffle and the table was overflowing with great items!
We wanted to give folks every opportunity we could to take something home with them and thus we had a “Poop Raffle” that rewarded you every time you cleaned up a pile of dog poop J; a “No Whining Raffle” that one could enter each time you didn’t Q on a course (and the prizes were bottles of wine with beardie labels and dog toy wine bottles!) and my favorite, the “WTH Raffle,” as in “What the Heck” do you mean I am first to the line in my class! (That one was a great suggestion from our wonderful trial secretary, Rhonda Toren).
One of the ideas that the committee had this year was to honor our recently retired and departed agility beardies. Beth Kortze did an amazing job putting together a wonderful tribute to these special dogs and I saw people stop frequently throughout the day to stop and read about them and look at their photos. This is something that I dearly hope will become a new specialty tradition!
We concluded the day with a BAD Ice Cream Social right at Bella Vista! This took the place of the traditional BAD dinner and it sure seemed that exhibitors enjoyed it! It gave exhibitors a chance to visit with each other in a relaxed setting but still allowed them to hit the road back to the hotel before it was too late. Each person had the fun of making their own creation, choosing from a topping bar that seemed almost endless! Special thanks to Jeremy Haag for shopping at the Hershey Company Store! The beardies had their own special bowls just for the dogs and it was great fun to see so many of them enjoying a sweet reward after a long agility day!
The BAD Person of the Year was Trudy Wisner

I stated in my opening sentence that every team had success. Now I am sure some of you are thinking, “But hey, I didn’t qualify at all,” (LOL…I was one with no Q’s J) but agility isn’t only about the Q’s. What my committee and I saw that day as well as the folks who came out as spectators was exhibitors connecting with their dogs on all levels, enjoying the teamwork, and clearly demonstrating how far this sport has come in general as well as in beardies! We saw exhibitors exhibit only the best sportsmanship, dogs with unbelievable skills, even some of those that didn’t Q, people enjoying their canine teammates, and we saw some of the most joyful beardies ever doing something they clearly love to do! That folks is SUCCESS!
Wall-to-wall beardies all excited about playing agility games. I just can't imagine how a day could be any more awesome.
My first ever opportunity to attend the bearded collie national specialty agility trial created memories I am certain I will cherish forever. The trial was extraordinarily well designed and implemented; the trial chair and organizing committee can not possibly receive enough compliments and praise for all of their hard work and efforts to make it extra special. The trial secretary was stellar with lightning fast and complete information provided from the point of registration to the post-trial notifications. All of the personal touches really made the trial stand out and made it extra fun for all. The goodie bags were awesome, with the custom dog cookies and name tags an extremely thoughtful addition. The tributes to our companions watching from the rainbow bridge were touching and what a nice touch to pay tribute to the retired veterans. And oh my goodness, the trophies...ALL of the trophies, ribbons and awards were absolutely amazing.
In terms of the trial, this was my first time ever being around so many beardies and it was more exciting than I ever imagined. An introvert by nature, I mostly watched and admired beardie teams I had read about via the BAD web site and Libby's postings. I reached out and introduced myself to a few, and wish I had been brave enough to do even more. However, while I tend to focus a lot of my attention at trials on my special girl, I do very much enjoy watching other teams run and celebrate their successes. I was impressed and proud to be part of the community because everyone I saw was positive and loving to their running companion. I can't say this is always the case at other trials. In fact, it isn't and handlers blaming their dogs for errors and being negative is the worst part of the agility experience for me. This trial was summed up nicely by those cool t-shirts...seemingly everyone was "running happy" and the joy was evident.
The judge was very friendly and designed courses that seemed to flow nicely for all of the teams. I was impressed with the overall level of talent from the young novice teams all the way up to the highly decorated veteran teams. There is nothing quite like watching a room full of beardies having a blast while playing agility games...that's for sure. The relay was my first-ever team experience and the all-tunnel format offered up oodles of fun. It was great to see the spirit of all the participants, but I was especially impressed with the clever t-shirts, team names and costumes associated with the relay race. The relay race and yummy ice cream social were a perfect way to end the day.
There was no way to anticipate the personal experience I would have at this trial. I feel truly blessed and somewhat overwhelmed. I came to Gettysburg super excited to introduce Razzles to the bearded collie community and hoping to have the opportunity to show some of the skills we have worked hard to develop. Razzles is passionate about agility and when I watch the videos of our runs, the passion and joy that she exudes is evident and that's really what it is all about. I admit that I had selfishly hoped we might put a clean run together and hoped for a placement of some type in one of the events, but I never dared to dream of the day we had. Razzles knows nothing about trophies and prizes, (but she does love the stuffed animal and tug toys she won!), all she knows is that agility is fun and that she had BIG FUN running on the turf in Gettysburg. For me, I am grateful for the gorgeous plaques, ribbons and fun prizes. I will display/save them to remember the day, but the greatest prize of all is having the honor to run with my special girl. In my world, she is always the best. The rainbow bridge and retired agility beardie tributes make me realize our time to have this fun together is limited and I intend to treasure each and every run with her and celebrate them all regardless of the outcome.
Thanks again to all who worked so hard to put together such a terrific trial. Your efforts were evident and greatly appreciated!

"TUNNELS...TUNNELS...and MORE TUNNELS!!!! That is what a mess of deliriously happy agility beardies found in this year's BAD relay!"
The BAD relay is a LONG TIME tradition at Beardie Specialties, begun by Beth Canner in 2001 to encourage Novice handlers, and changes a bit from year to year which is part of the fun of it! This year's relay attracted twenty-three 3 Dog Teams (sixty-nine beardies in all). I am not sure that is a record but it had to be close if not! We were so pleased to have Jack Buhite serve as the judge! I am sure Jack would have preferred to be running Ceilidh but, alas, she was home in Calilfornia! Judge Lavonda joined in the fun, borrowing a Wigglesworth dog and running on a team! The relay was made up entirely of tunnels.
Top Team: Beardies on my Mind - 42.48'
Razzles with John Youngblood, Colby with Andrea Hobe, Sawyer with Jenny Scheytt
2nd Place - WombMates - 43.78'
Caol Ila with Ruth Bryden, Kit with Jeremy Haag, and Quincy with Sonja Blanchard
in front of banner made for Trudy Wisner
3rd Place - Tunnel Busters - 46.43'
A new twist for the relay this year was the addition of “The Young and the Restless” division that allowed puppy teams (they had to be between 9 and 12 months old and have had agility foundation training) and veteran teams (age 10 or over).
