Ann McQuillen has been an AKC agility judge since 1999. She began showing a friend's Aussie in the 1980s because her Doberman Pinscher wa too old to jump repetivitively. At the time the only sanctioning orgniztion was USDAA and titles were awarded with just one qualifying leg! She went on to show two Shelties, Digby and Lady, as well as an Australian Cattledog and her Australian Kelpies in USDAA as well as NADAC.
After the inception of the AKC program, Ann began showing all her dogs in the new venue. She owned and handled two of the twenty-two Australian Kelpies registed in in the AKC agility program. Since then Ann has handled multiple breeds and currently handles dogs in all height divisions. She is also a DOCNA judge and shows in multiple agility venues.
Many competitors will rementber Ann's Australian Cattledog Ted's "Wild Child" days, when he stepped on a judge's head as he exited the A-Frame. He went on to earn an MX MXJ AXP AXJ NF in AKC and multiple titles in other venues. Ted is now retired. He is Ann's ride along buddy when he isn't installed on the couch.
Ann's current competition dog is a very fast and sometimes silly 2 year old Parson Russell Terrier, Twister. Zip, her 15 month old Parson Russell Terrier, is still in training. To date Twist has never been out of the ribbons and Ann is looking forward to a fun time running her in all venues.
To "earn the kibble," Ann has been a Commercial Real Estate Broker for over 29 years. She sells and leases properties of all types and does residential sales for "dog people" who need someone who understands their requirements.
Ann coordinates the Rescue Referral Program that allows breed and non-profit rescue organizations to raise money through real estate referrals. Last year the program raised more than $10,000 for rescue groups around the US. She received the Australian Cattle Dog Club's Gaines Spotsmanship Award in 2000 for her continued dedication to rescue and the breed.
Ann, her husband, Peter, and all the "critters" live in Somerset, California, in the wine country of the High Sierra.
When I recall the 2008 Bearded Collie National Specialty Agility Trial, a quote from John Heywood comes to mind, “Many hands make light work”. I have been congratulated by many for the success of the trial. All of you in Beardie agility that attended and contributed in great and small ways are the real stars. From the building up and taking down of the courses to the collection of geese poop on the ground, many hands made the majority of the work very light for those of us who were responsible for the trial. More importantly was the constant presence of the camaraderie that we all enjoy and the congratulations we gave to those that were skilled enough and lucky enough to qualify and place. Of course, the purpose for all this effort and energy expended is the thrill of the sport of agility and the time we are all able to share with our beloved human and canine friends. I am proud to have been able to fulfill that purpose with a very fine group of beardies and their owners. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you to every one of our workers and volunteers who made the equipment unloading, setup and loading happen, who raked the field of goose poop, and who helped move things along. We were lucky to have Ann McQuillen as our judge - she always keeps us in good spirits!

I now know that it takes a village to prepare the fairgrounds for an agility trial. I also know more about goose poop than I ever thought possible. Apparently, the Canadian Geese felt this was a superb field to vacation on and were a bit unhappy that we wanted to use it for the day. We had our own flock of helpers with plastic bags, rakes and trash cans clearing off the grass so we could at least provide a path to the obstacles for FAST. We were like little hordes of bumblebees scouring the field, each with their own style of pick up and delivery. We were successful and the trial got off to a great start.
Northern California has the good fortune of having Tammy and Chris Domico to provide the most brilliant colored agility equipment in world. The bright pink weavepoles are enough to make everyone smile. They also have a great wing jump with a brown beardie on one side and a black beardie on the other.
A very big thanks to Molly McNamara for all her hard work before the trial and her quick posting of scores after the runs. She also ran two dogs of her own while working the score table. There wasn't any shortage of workers.
The weather was perfect agility weather, cool and overcast for most of the day. The courses were fun and challenging and it was interesting to see the different handling styles used to meet the challenges that the courses provided. I was pleased with my dogs, Spice and Stix, for stepping up to the line and doing the best job they knew how to do. Stix had no idea there were so many beardies in the world and couldn't keep his head from spinning to see who was doing what and where.
The trigility relay at the end of the day was great fun. Spice ran on a team with her older sister Star and Stix' mother, Jodie. Our team was the "Golden Girls" as they are all over the age of 7 now and we won't say anything about the age of their handlers. Star and Jana ran the jumpers course, Spice and I ran the contacts and Jodie nailed the gamble in record time to secure a first place for our team.
It was a long day starting before dawn and finishing after 5, but it was a complete success. It was good seeing friends from far away and meeting new people. The geese did do a fly-by to see if we were done with the field.
Best of luck to Minnesota in 2009. I feel like I should make a special effort to get to Minnesota since my maiden name was Swenson...might meet some family members

Trigility Team Relay
Trigility is a team strategy game that tests the ability of team members to compete in three different types of regular agility courses. There are 3 members to a team and each team member runs one type of course. The goal is to complete all 3 "mini" courses in the shortest time.
The "mini" course types are run in the following order:
1) Jumpers (no weaves)
2) Standard (2 to 3 contacts, tunnels and jumps)
3) Gamblers (all equipment can be used with a distance gamble up to 4 distance obstacles)
Relay Guidelines:
*Beardies must be at least 15 months of age.
Scoring: Time plus Faults. No run outs or refusals. Dropped bars: 5 pts. Off Course: 10 points.
To be successful the team must complete the "mini" distance test (gamble).
*Prizes will be awarded.
