BEARDED COLLIE CLUB OF AMERICA
Chair’s Report – Pam Harris “Well, the 2018 BCCA National Specialty Agility Trial has come and gone. Looking back at the day, we had great weather, great exhibitors, a great judge (Jeff ipser), great help and a great time! Jeff is known for having challenging, fun and doable courses as well as for his own expertise in trialing and obtaining many MACH titles on his Beardies. We were so pleased he could join us. I would like to thank my co-chair, Jack Buhite, the agility committee of Libby Myers-Buhite, Jana Dozet, Suzi Beddoe, and AKC/USDAA Judge Tammy Domico, as well as our show Secretary Lorie Abbott for their dedication and expertise for putting on a trial. Our Chief Course Builder and Equipment supplier, Tammy Domico, is well known for being fast and efficient in setting up courses! Together she and Jeff made a perfect team! As usual I was so proud of our Beardie community for volunteering and stepping in where needed, but mostly for all of their friendliness and camaraderie! The workers that Tammy recruited (Chuck and Gail Budde, Terri and Ronnie Weaver, and Marsha West) were so appreciated and kept the trial running smoothly. Ron Avila handled the timers without a flaw! A big thank you to Barbara Stone for stepping in and helping with the timing/scribing duties. Thank you to Gayle Dozet for making sure all the little things were taken care of such as food, drinks and anything that I needed help with. A great big thank you to Susan Boylan, Stephanie, and Michael for always being there to help! Thanks, too, to Patsy Sullivan for all of your ring work. All of you were indispensable and so appreciated! And Libby, thank you for taking on the job of scoring and being sure all was correct! Jana, thank you for making and donating the placement tug toys as well as the relay baton! They were awesome!! I know how hard you worked on them! Finally, I would like to congratulate the winners and thank you all for coming!”
“I want to thank the Northern California Bearded Collie Fanciers for asking me to judge the 2018 National Specialty agility trial. The trial was held outdoors on grass within walking distance of the hotel rooms. The weather was sunny and in the 70s. When I walked on the grass the day before the trial, I noticed that the grass was thick and fluffy. I had a concern that dropped bars would be an issue. We started with the Time 2 Beat class. Five dogs ran the course. The first four dogs did drop bars. The fifth ran clean and was HIT. The next class was FAST. The entry was a little larger and bars seemed to stay up for the most part. The dogs and handlers made the adjustment to the running surface. The next two classes were Standard and JWW. We ended the day with the relay that featured eight two Beardie/two Handler teams with a baton exchange area. I want to thank all the workers and the trial committee for their dedication to our club’s trial. As usual, members eagerly filled all of the working spots so that the exhibitors could focus on the dogs and runs. Several people came to work who didn’t even have dogs entered. HIT awards and worker prizes were very impressive. Thank you again for asking me to judge our National Specialty.”

We saw many beautiful Beardies running with joy and caught up with old friends and made many new ones! From start to finish it was a perfect day! Emma and I had a fantastic trial. Emma ran fast and clean the whole day. You can't ask your dog for any more than that! She ended up in 1st place in her four runs and was delighted with all of the tug toys (made by Jana Dozet), that she got to take home. Our day ended on a major high: High in Trial in both Standard and T2B plus High Combined and High Scoring Champion of Record!!!! We went home with enough trophy chairs to outfit our patio!! What a truly amazing day!! Lastly, I just want to give my thanks to all who competed, watched, worked and made this trial happen!”

Sue wrote: “My mom, Doris Banfield, was there with me at the Specialty. She wasn’t really ‘there’ but the many amazing Beardie people who hugged me and shared a story, who encouraged me and explained the game, who cheered for me and yelled to have Echo stop the clock at the finish jump in FAST, well, you all shared your love and in doing so, were there for me and it felt like Mom. Echo and I bumbled our way thru the day and managed to end up on our feet. At the end of the JWW (another acronym) a new friend said ‘You got a Q!’ I had to ask what that meant. The nerves began to let up near the end when the delightful Christiana Taylor and I participated in the tunnel relay. This nervous novice didn’t understand the rules of another new game, but the kind judge gently educated me and we went on to get 2nd place and win some beautiful hand-made dog toys. In the end, we won a chair and beautiful ribbons, but the real prize was meeting a crew of kindred. I had hoped the BCCA experience would help close a circle for me, but what it did was quite the opposite. A new world has been revealed: a competitive environment where everyone, with the support and encouragement of other competitors, can be a winner. This is a new thing to me and I like it. Dog Agility is the opposite of a zero-sum game and I really love the idea. Echo and I are going to work hard and we look forward to seeing you all at future dog events. Many thanks for the hard work of the Beardie people, who put this all together. (Looked like a Masters course in organizational strategy.) Your devotion and love have raised the dark curtain and given light to new possibilities. Thank you all.”
