First, I want to thank Carol Sirine for not giving up on the 2020 National Specialty! I want to thank my committee members: David Williamson (my right-hand guy), Larry Dalan, Meg Naylor, Lori Weinberg, Martha Fruehwald, and Nancy Kois. Also thank you to all those who worked on the Specialty to make it so great. Thank you to all of you who volunteered to work throughout the day helping to keep the trial moving along. Thank you, also for all of you who brought donations for the worker raffle! We sure had a lot of great stuff to raffle off! There were lots of great runs and the relay was a blast. Our judge Lisa Potts put out some fun and challenging courses. Thank you all so much! What a fun two days we had!
The 2020 National Specialty was a long time coming but is finally in the history books! The agility trials were held Thursday and Friday. Since 2017 when the BCCA last held Nationals at Purina, the running surface has been changed to “Westminster”- style turf. It provided excellent footing for all the Beardies. Two rings were set up so that one course could be built while the one in the other ring was being used for competition. This allowed efficient running of the classes, an important consideration with four classes and 172 runs to get through each day. Cheri Omnus and her committee are to be commended for their efforts. Thanks to all the exhibitors and spectators who worked as well. It’s impossible to run trials like these without lots of hands to pitch in when needed. Our judge, Lisa Potts provided open and flowing but still challenging courses to try every team’s skills.

After the official classes of the agility trial had been completed on Thursday, two special attractions were held. First, four Beardies celebrated their retirement from agility competition with a final glory run to thunderous applause and much barking: Andrea Hobe and Brie, Deb Alexander and McKenzie, Karen Reed and Sterling, and Suzanne O’Malley and Maggie. David Williamson and McGuffey and Kathy Tomlinson and Rhia had also planned to participate but were unable to make it to Purina. The Glory runs were followed by the annual relay competition. Nine teams of three ran a fast and furious course of tunnels and jumps. 5 Faults were accessed for each dropped bar and were added to the total time for the team; failure to complete the course in the order designed by the judge resulted in no time being recorded for that team. Win or lose a good time was had by all!

The pandemic restrictions on group meals at Purina were relaxed just in time to allow everyone to cap the day’s competition with a fun evening of food and companionship.
Cheri: “It was a nice way to spend some time together. We all fit as many folks as we could at each table, although we were only supposed to have four!”
At the BAD dinner the relay results were announced and the annual BCCA agility awards passed out.
Suzanne O’Malley was named the BAD Member of the Year.
